Question E30 324td vs E34 325tds

Hello
Which of the models do you think is better (not considering comfort)? 324td or 325tds? Which engine is more reliable M21 vs M51? Which one is more common to have problems?

There's a car that I am considering to buy. Here is the link (sorry it's not in english).
http://auto.plius.lt/skelbimai/bmw-3...s-2548037.html
They guy wants about 4900 USD or 3800 EUR. He says that he has installed 330d brakes, bigger turbo, installed intercooler, rebuilt generator, starter, almost entire motor (pump, valves, etc.). Also installed ///M steering wheel and ///M shifter. Do you think this car is a good idea?

The E34 is much more car, and is probably newer and won't have non-motor things break.

Sorry, my reading is all messed up - E51 & E21 are not engine designations; E21 was the '76-82 320i/323i, and there is no E51 at all. I believe you mean M21 & M51 (engine designations.) See http://www.unixnerd.demon.co.uk/bmw.html

An E30 324td should be quite reliable; the motor was good (some even came to the US in the 524td - I think that's why I mentioned E34 5-series). The one shown has the msport seats also (I think). However, it's been modded heavily, and that often affects reliability.

That seems like quite a high price, but I only know a bit about Lithuania (was there for 4-5 days last year.) And the car appears to be in Estonia (which might actually be good?)

Ah, sorry man. I did not even realize I just wrote that dumb **** "E21 E51". I feel like and idiot now

My father, my friend and some people on the internet claim that E51 2.5 tds engine is one of the most faulty BMW engines. They say that 325tds or 525tds takes about 200 000km (125 000 miles) until cylinder heads crack. As a mechanic, my father said he had seen lots of 2.5 tds cars visiting his garage. But some people claim otherwise. They say that M51 is much more reliable than M21. So which one do you people think is more reliable?

My father also said that E36 are prone to rust because the body is very thin and that they rust more badly than E34, dont know about E30 though. What do you think about this?

For price comparison with 324td I give you E46 330 http://www.autogidas.lt/bmw-330-e46-...124660876.html. It costs 5304 Euros or 6980 U.S. dollars.

Here is a list of cars for price comparison: http://auto.plius.lt/skelbimai/naudo...06_10947_11114

And those are the cars I was thinking of buying:
1. The expensive 324td http://auto.plius.lt/skelbimai/bmw-3...s-2548037.html
2. The not so expensive 325tds with questionable reliability: http://auto.plius.lt/skelbimai/bmw-3...s-2688204.html
3. Another 324td. Looks like stock but would need a lot of work done. Plus I'm suspicious because it was gone for a few weeks and reposted again. Asuming somebody bought it and is selling it right away or the post was outdated and reposted. http://www.autogidas.lt/bmw-324-e30-...124743819.html

I have also had thoughts about E30 coupe body with M51. I've seen a few people done this sucessfully.

Since the US only saw the 2.4td engine, I can't comment at all on the 325tds as far as reliability. The e36 chassis is good - better balanced than the e30 - and it's a little roomier (my brother has a 325is and it's over 200K miles with no rust or other problems.)

You might try to find some UK forums to ask (or other EU), because I'm at the limit of my knowledge here. (And anyone else not EU/UK based.)

Which of the these 2 should I buy if I plan to modify it anyways? The modified version or the stock one?

1. Modified http://auto.plius.lt/skelbimai/bmw-3...s-2548037.html
2. Stock. I'm suspicious because it was gone for a few weeks and reposted again. Assuming somebody bought it and is selling it right away for some reason or the post was simply outdated and reposted. http://www.autogidas.lt/bmw-324-e30-...124743819.html
