Window Tint

so, i would like to take off the tint on my car. whats my best option, taking it to a tint shop and paying them to do it? or is there an easy DIY method?

BTW, i didnt have it put on - the previous owner had it put on so i dont know what kind it is.

Do an internet search...there are a handful of techniques on this, but no easy fix. It'll take some elbow grease regardless of which option you select. Last time I had to do a tint removal project I used a heat gun to get the film off. You may find some pieces will require a razor blade or paint scaper. Be careful not to damage rear window defrost or if using a scraper. Then use rubbing alcohol to scrub the adheasive off. There are more harsher chemicals similar to paint thinner that could be used also, but you run the chance of ruining your interior fabrics/leather if you go that route. A tint shop will probably charge $100-$200 for this job.

Get a steamer used for clothing and it will peel right off; take your time and do it right.

I had to remove the tint on my e90, it failed state inspection in new state. Was on for 6 years. I did use our clothes steamer, plus a spray bottle of water with a drop of clear dish soap.

It took about 15 minutes per window. I then used the steamer and glass cleaner to get all the residue off, but only took an additional 5 minutes or so.

Steamer the only way to go.

Never used a steamer - does seem like a good idea. Years ago I tinted cars for summer work and no matter what you do, removing tint is a time consuming/ messy job. Don't take a razor blade to the rear window!

To me, may be better to bite the bullet and have a shop experiened do it - you can have residual glue below where you can see on the windows that roll down as well as other places you have never thought of. Worth the $$$ in my book.
