This leads to something I've been wondering about...In England we always referred to 'manuals' but in the US in most places it is referred to as 'stick-shift'. Why is it everyone on the Bimmerfest forums says 'manual'? Are you all secret Anglophiles?

Yep. I too am in need of a Ute or Ate. Would like to replace my wife's G37 with one. Both around the same price range.

Mein Auto: 2013 328i
I have been driving a loaner X1 this week as my 328i is at the dealer trying to get the ASS fixed. I find the X1 disappointing. Looks like a station wagon, I don't like the drive (granted it is automatic & I am used to manual. Constantly feels like I'm on the wrong gear), & there is rattle in the back (only 2k miles on the car, it shouldn't rattle).

It blew away everything else that she looked at so badly that I couldn't get her to even look at anything else. She had driven a 370Z auto, VW Jetta gas and diesel, Fiat 500, VW GTI. She bought an X1 Xline with power seats, satellite radio, and wood trim. It is an awesome car. I'm 40 and everything about it is familiar. It's like a nicer, faster version of every car I've had in the past. My 328i is like a space ship in comparison. So quiet, so many options, idrive, complex stereo, sport seats, lower to the ground. When I get in my 328, I feel like I'm getting into a jet cockpit. I love my 3 but it feels like more of an experience and commitment to drive. The X1, we just jump in and go. Great, simple transportation. The 8 speed auto they use in the X1 and 3 series is so good, it makes me almost regret not getting an automatic for the first time ever. When you put the X1 in sport mode and floor it, everyone starts cracking up because they are shocked at how fast it is! One other thing to know, I feel like the suspension in the X1 is just as firm as my M sport. Thes seats are also VERY firm. The X1 is a great option for a lot of people. At $31k, it's a hell of a car considering almost any decent suv/wagon is $30k, I'd rather have a BMW.
My 328I is not a quiet ride

For some reason the 13's are bait quieter than the 12's.

It is "cheap" only in comparison with F31. But remember F30 has much higher standard equipment content level compare to the E91 and X1.

Compare to E91, the X1 28i prices are about the same (in the US). X1 replaced E91 in the US for all intent and purpose after BMW phased out the E91. There are some signs of obvious cost cutting on the inside of X1 with cheap to the touch hard plastic dashboard and painted silver plastic trims (if you don't pay extra for wood). The E9x 3 series had aluminum and no cost wood... little things like that all add up.

In terms of driving dynamics, it is almost identical to AWD E9x. It's a good option for anyone that finds F31 a bit too pricey.
