Alarm system

What you guys think I have 07 328i and want to get an alarm for it.
STOCK alarm BMW wants $900+
Local audio and alarm said Viper Alarm most likely 1000 series for $350
If I go with viper what you think about the proximity sensor on it for around $200 everything is with it installed.
Let me know what you think. Thanks

IIRC, you used to be able to get the parts for the stock alarm for +/- $400, and it was a very easy DIY install.

ECS Tuning and Tischer sell it for Mid $200'ish to $300'ish. Your 2007 should be pre-wired for the Anti Theft Alarm. Can be a good DIY to cut costs. Perhaps you won't need programming either ($100'ish at dealer).

Installing an alarm means tapping into the cars basic electronics (door locks, etc). I really would hesitate with something aftermarket.

My very first nice car was a beautiful Honda Accord Coupe. I took it to Circuit City and had a Viper alarm installed and had one electrical problem after another subsequently.

The BMW alarm is also nice in that it NEVER false alarms and has been extremely reliable.

Now, whether you really need an alarm is another question. I always though that 90% of the protection just comes from having a flashing red light on the dash. There are various tricks for enabling that on your BMW without having an alarm.

I decided to go with the OEM alarm, after much of the wonderful advice on this topic from our fellow 'festers.

Please take a moment to visit my previous thread:

OEM vs. Aftermarket Alarm for '07 328i

Our vehicles are pre-wired for the alarm, and the quote I got from my local audio shop said they could install the Viper alarm system for $400. The Viper system sounded great, especially the remote start option and motion sensor, but then I started to second guess it when I took the complex electronics of my BMW into consideration. The guys working at the shop even gave me a disclaimer about the installation, saying that they'd have to mess with my electronics. I think that was the deal breaker for me. Buying a factory alarm would come out to about the same cost for the part itself, and any additional costs are up to you, unless you DIY.
