3.0l petrol, to many km's to buy? help

hi, i found a bmw x5 e53 3.0i petrol 2003 model for $13000aud which is pretty cheap here.
i havent been to see it yet because i wanted to ask ur opinion first, the car has 234,578km (145,760 miles) on it. it says the service is upto date on the car.

my question is is this to many km for this car?

how many km would i expect to get from a tank? around town and highway?

This is a subjective call which varies on a number of factors. The km's alone would not automatically rule it out if it's in good condition, the price is right (which you indicate it might be), how long you intend to keep it, and if you're able and willing to spend money on maintenance / repairs.

Prior to my current X5 I owned a 2001 4.4 that had 129K miles (206km). While not quite the km's as the vehicle you're considering I wouldn't hesitate to recommend my old X5 to anyone. It was in excellent shape and had a number of maintenance / repair issues performed to it during the time I owned it. Given this the new owner got themselves a well maintained vehicle which I'm sure will given them many years and miles to go.

I recommend having a PPI performed by a qualified BMW mechanic. Look over the maintenance / repair history. Check the condition of the body and interior. How clean is it? Does it look as if someone just wiped it down? Or does it look like cleaning was performed regularly? Also look for the small things...they can reveal a lot about how the owner took care of their vehicle (for instance I replaced the seat belt holder pin on the passenger side seat belt as I'm that picky about my vehicles). Small things are just that...small, but if there are a lot of little things wrong then the owner may not have been too concerned about proper maintenance. And finally accept that if you should buy this vehicle there are likely to be a few things here and there that need to be addressed.

I'd be careful about a car with that many Kms. The above post offers some good advice. Go to the trouble to check everything on this car. X5s are capable of going forever. They are beautifully designed and built. But you will have some issues. Possible things are drivetrain, air conditioner, brake pads and discs, gear box and onboard diagnostics. Make sure all these components are in order. Take it for a good test drive. It should drive pithily without smells or strange noises. Best you get it checked. $13000 is a good buy, but expect to pay up to 2500 -3000 getting it sorted out if there are some issues.
