ASS Recode Question

My car is coming in next Wednesday. I asked the salesguy by email to make sure the ASS got recoded to last setting. Hee is what he wrote back:

"On the ASS BMW will not allow us to change the default process until you have taken delivery of the car. They actually want you to drive the car for a week before they will change the ASS."

Does this sound right to you?

My guy told me something similar, but since he wanted me happy he ate the cost so it was done at my time of picking up the car.

I was not required to take delivery before they coded it, although it worked that way in practice, as they said that they could not get it coded correctly and I needed to return it to the service department for a few add-ons any way, so they did it two days later.

The only thing I can think of is that Dealership gets paid under the warranty to perform the re-coding. That may mean that the buyer has to take delivery to activite the warranty coverage.

The SIB requires the dealer to discuss the operation of ASS and its benefits with the customer. Then according to the SIB:

"Should a customer still request Last user mode, submit a PuMA case entitled Activate MSA memory conversion.

The IBAC code necessary to perform this conversion will be provided in the response to the PuMA case."

As many BMW dealerships will immediately perform the change, I would discuss this further with them.

I have read about this on these forums before. People have confirmed that some dealers recoded their ASS before they took delivery. Exceptions can obviously be made, so you should press them on it. When I place my order soon, this will definitely be something I will ask for.

The point already raised regarding the warranty needing to be activated is reasonable. Pursuant to the SIB:

"WARRANTY INFORMATION
The conversion procedure outlined above can be submitted for reimbursement, one time on eligible vehicles, during the BMW New Vehicle/SAV Limited Warranty coverage period of 48 months or 50,000 miles."

I'm taking my car in Monday for this under warranty. They will put the drive mode under last use mode as well. Tired of changing from comfort.

Didn't realize this was an option. Anyone else do this also?

All gratis correct?

I scheduled an appointment next week to get ASS set to last use mode

Yes. I have a list of other coding but most they won't do because they are not allowed they say.

Trying to get single pull unlock and navi/audio off with door pull as well.

Disclaimer removal, turn signals in the HUD, they won't touch.

Noob here, ASS = auto start stop? How and why are you wanting to change this from the default setting?

I would be really shocked if they will change this, though please let us know if they actually do it!

For those of us who hate it and always turn it off. It will now be off when you start if it was off when you last shut off the car.

BMW has received lots of complaints on it and are paying under warranty the coding needed to turn it to last use.

Ah I see. I currently have this feature on my mini, and do find it annoying. However when I tested it on the 330 it seemed smoother and less intrusive. I think I will give it a ride for a week or so and see how I get on with it. I guess they will simply change it at no cost if I ask a week down the line?

Is this something I should mention when I pick up the car? - ... Still waiting Prob will be another 7-8 weeks till I get to see it. The wait is killing me!

edit" Is the change you guys are asking for is that the computer just remembers your previous setting, but not to remove ASS alltogether? If this is the case then surely this is the best system to have?!

It's not the end of the world to drive the car before the recode. All it takes is an extra push of the button to deactivate. Once you get the recode, you will hardly remember the inconvenience.

No need to mention it. BMW will pay for the recode one time under warranty whenever, and if you decide to do it.

I had mine done before delivery but they wanted to charge me after the fact. I pointed them to the bulletin and they dropped it.

Hi guys....I made my appointment today to recode....Dealer told me it was free but that it would take all day and I would need a loaner. Does that sound right? All day? Another question; for those of you who had the recoding where there any unforeseen consequences because of the recoding?

Thank....

I was told it takes anywhere from 2-4 hours.

I have had my 2013 328i since September & now the dealer wants to disable the ASS as they can't figure out why it occassionally won't restart when it should. I'm pushing that they need to fix the problem.

When I had my ASS done, the dealer had to get permission from BMWNA (PUMA I think it's called?) and they had to fax in a copy of the service write-up showing that the customer requested the re-code (which is why it can take 2-4 hours). The tech told me this was to prevent dealers from re-coding unsold cars and then requesting for reimbursement. As others here have said, it's covered under warranty, but only after the car has been signed for and sold. I guess dealers are also hesitant to re-code a car that has just come in from the VDC but hasn't had all the sales paper work completed...what if they re-code and the buyer decides not to go through with the sale for whatever reason?

It depends. If you car is new or has recently had a software update for other issues, then all the various modules in the car that get updated will be on current software... so the only thing that gets updated is the one module that controls ASS. This does not take very long. If, on he other hand, you car has never had an update and is older, many or all the modules on the car may also needs updates and this can take a few hours.

This is why you are seeing users here commenting about the wide range of times for the update.

Most of these responses make sense. Thanks for the insight. My dealer is something like 40 miles from my house so I would like to avoid burning a business day to deal with this. I will call him Monday and try to work something out with him on it.

My car is in the shop now for it. Will report back. They too wanted all day with it.

BMW used the ASS in the calculation of EPA fuel rating for CAFE standards. This is why they cannot turn it off without a customer complaint first recorded in their system.

Got the car back. Receipt showed it took the tech 1.5 hours to complete. Ass is now set to be on or off based on last use.

I had to redo the triple turn signal setting but all other settings were retained.

Love not having to turn it off.
