Z4M - Hickups
Well I have hit my first hard wall with the car. Last weekend's trip to PCB and Ft Walton Beach resulted in the car getting the hick ups. Started rough idel and would not stay running at stop signs and after getting started unless I kept the RPS above the 1000 mark. After a week at the shop the mechanic still does not know what is wrong with it. He says it does not appear to be the VANOS since he killed the silinode some how and the car still ran. He has replaced the IAC and that did not do anything, he has run a compression test and all the heads came back to 205 psi. He is supposed to do a leak down test but did not have a assistant so he'll do that pretty soon. Anyone out there that might be able to thow me some pointers?

Can you rule out dirty fuel?

That was one of my first thoughts, but mechanic said he checked both for octane, water, fuel pressure ect. Thought it was the IAC and swapped that out. Still doing the same thing. He's done a compression test, 205 on all 6 cylinders and was going to do a leak down test but his help left early so I guess that's coming on Monday.

Sounds like a vacuum leak, but I'm sure he checked for that.

That's what he was looking for, a medium size vacuum leak. But I just got the call, he worked it this weekend something broke in the hubs in the Vanos. He is going to scope the motor to see if any parts got into it.

![]() Bearing on the intake side gave way. It's a little hard to see, but if you look straight across from the hex bolt on the left and see a black piece of cable tie holding the bearing out, you will notice it's tilted. It don't come that way. ![]() Dr. Vanos replacement has been ordered for a swap out. The tabs did not break and I was lucky that no parts went into the motor. More pictures to follow later. So even if you check on the tabs and bolts when you do your valve adjustment I don't know of any way to see if the bearing has gone bad.

Thanks for the info. Glad it's on the way to being fixed.

Sorry to hear about the trouble, Stihlbolts.
Would you tell us how many miles on the car? Would you say you baby the engine or drive more spirited? |

45K Miles - It's never seen the track. I don't think it's something you can protect against, it was a bearing, you can never really tell when a sealed bearing is going to go. It just sucks. But it should be fixed to day.

The car is back on the road, and running great. $3800 dollars lighter in the wallet but much improved over what it had been. I just did not understand it was already in trouble I guess. Anyway I posted pictures of the Vanos after it came off and other issues, what happed is that when it was installed someone left a washer out, that washer was running around in there loose. So time to get it cleaned up and on the road for some me time. Regards.

Glad to hear you are back on the road and sorry to hear a out the cost. Is there any chance that BMW will pick up the tab since it was a manufacturing defect?

Its a nice thought. But I doubt they would step up. Warranty ran out back in November.
