Join the club.

Here is a company that will either have you send them your radio and repair it ($169.00 + shipping) or send you a new display if you are handy for 149.00.

It is a very common problem and you can find plenty of other people on this and other BMW websites that have the same issue.

Some horiz lines out - a common problem w/dot matrix LCD displays. Could be a connector, controller, or very often the LCD display.

The LCD display on my radio/cd player works great for the first 30 minutes or so, then it begins to fade out in vertical lines.

You can still read it but it is very annoying and gives the car a junky feeling.

As soon as I get an extra 150 bucks and the time to mess with it I'm going to send it to German Audiotech to swap it out for a good one.

I'm going to do the same, the dealership i purchased from gave me a 99 day warranty I believe it covers the radio, my question is would the new radio they put in do the same thing sould I bother with the dealer? or should I just send it away. I have to take it in because I need a window switched replaced too so I'l going to try.

That's a good question. I guess if you don't mind taking it out yourself the dealer would probably agree to pay the 169 bucks and that way you'd be certain that you had a new LCD display instead of one that was going to do the same thing a year or so later.

This is a long time problem with BMW Radio's

A dealer will only replace the whole unit I am pretty sure.
They have been using this same display type since before the
turn of the century. So if you get another BMW Radio it probably will
happen again especially if you live in an extreme temperature climate.

Like I said, mine only does it after 30 minutes or so and based on what I have read from other posters I think it is due to heat. The radio area is noticeably warm to the touch when the failure occurs.

I wonder if I could rig a little cooling fan behind the dash pointed at the radio to alleviate the problem?

This require new LCD screen to be installed. No other remedy

You can just replace the ribbon cable (what connect board to the LCD). Most likely LCD doesn't need to be replaced (unless it is cracked). Pretty easy fix.

...Or just wear polarized sun glasses and you won't even be able to see the screen. Problem solved.

That was the first thing I noticed after I bought my car - I put on my ray-ban's to drive away, and thought the radio display had gone dark, until I cocked my head looking at it.

I wondered if it had been installed with a wonky screen, but apparently not...

Wanted to ask this since this seems to be a issue with the radio. I have a extra radio but it is logic 7 while the current one is just hifi. Can I take the face plate off the logic 7 and put it in the hifi radio. Seems you can do that as it's just the display. Going to look tonight but if anyone can answer that would be great.

Faceplate swap

I'm also interested to know if removing the board the lcd is soldered to and swapping with another that is working will work. (picture/step 9 & 10 on this DIY http://www.e90post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=635672

I have a 06 330i with Logic 7 and am wondering: if the swap is possible, does the replacement need to come from an 06 with logic 7, or will any cd73 head unit work?

Lastly, could the issue be a heat sink problem? I notice in the link above the step which refers to removing and reapplying thermal paste--my display fades after about 30 min as well, more when it's cold out, and on cold mornings it looks perfect.

Thanks in advance!

Ps--if I decide to send my whole radio out to get the lcd replaced, can I drive the car withou it?

On the old radio's its possible to code and old radio after 09 it became a problem
unless you use a icom cable. (which is a rather expensive cable)

BMW inisists on this LCD assembly it has been a problem since the last century.

You must use your original radio or reprogram the new radio
if you don't happen to get one that is programmed for your sound
system if may not work for some or all of your options.

I find this baffling from a company that embraces almost every novel technology that comes down the pike, from self-driving cruise control to solar powered air conditioning. Why they would cling to this 1980's display technology is beyond comprehension. Do they have controlling interest in a Liquid Crystal Display company?

Well I tried the switch and it did work but I did mess up the little white cable that attaches to the radio to the display so it stopped working. Lucky for me I was able to find another radio cheap 5 min later after receiving it I was able to install and all is good. Next project is to try the CIC Retrofit in my 6 series, wish me luck.

Radio display Issue

I bought the LCD off of eBay...all I needed was a solder gun, flat head screwdriver and patience....voila I replaced LCD the myself. The thought of mailing my radio away and not having music in my car for two weeks was unbearable.

How tough was the soldering? All of the DIYs I've seen don't really explain that part except to say don't screw up!
