2012 vs 2013 vs 2014

I'm confused about the differences btwn 2012 and 2013 650i

Edmunds states "the 2013 BMW 6 Series continues largely unchanged. The 650i's turbocharged V8 engine is more powerful this year, rising from 400 horsepower to 445 hp"

However, in various threads on this forum I've heard 2013 now comes better mileage, standard with premium stereo, contour seats, soft close and other changes ?

I've yet to read what's new in the 2014 models.

Would someone be kind as to summarize or point to me somewhere where the differences are spelled out?

Thanks!

Miz

The engine hp bump was the biggest change from 2012 to 2013 for the 650. I don't think there is a significant difference in gas mileage between model years, if any. Expect to average somewhere around 18 - 19 mpg with mixed driving. If the gas mileage is a concern for you, maybe you can look at a 640 or go with a 528 or 328?

No idea for certain what '14 brings.

Definitely go '13 instead of '12 - more bang for your buck (Exec. pkg. and standard premium sound, etc.) and more HP to keep stashed under the hood

If you're worried about the mpg, then reconsider the 650i. I'm getting about 11 mpg all the time with my nearly all city driving. I'm currently reading 9.8 mpg since I got my car back from the dealer. Sure, if I set cruise to 70 mph and reset the mpg computer, I get about 23 mpg. Outside of that "test" I never see over 16 with my mixed, which is still mostly city. My mpg sucks, just like my car sucks down premium. Do I care? No. I'm sure I could stay in Comfort mode more and let the auto box keep me in the lower RPMs to improve my economy, but I didn't buy this car for tame driving.

Hmm. What do you get doing straight highway? I am debating a 6 myself and going back and forth between the 640 and 650. I have the x5M so I can get my speed demon fix out of that. The 6 will be the new "daily beater" and do 30k miles a year. Im leaning toward the 640 since I thought it was pretty quick during the test drive. It is faster then the 535.

Care to tell us what kind of gas mileage you are getting on your 640? I am looking at the exact same color combo myself.

If I'm good (rarely happens) I avg 26/27 combined. If you have it in comfort and on cruise in the freeway, you can get low 30's pretty easily.

My normal driving is still pretty good. I avg about 22. But do have more freeway than city. But the freeway is stop and go and city is....well fun!!!

Thanks for the information. That is roughly what I get in my 535i 6MT. I am usually between 25-28 mpg all depending on how much city driving I do. With cruise on 70-75 mph I get 27 mpg on average. Sounds like the 640 is probably my best bet.

I do mostly city driving in my 650i using Comfort mode 80% of the time. Typically I get 18 to 19.5mpg.

Cool 640 gas

Agree with Mr Krischapel gas comsuption assesment in the 640. Further more, I just turned in a jaguar XK 8 cilinder lease, and the gas milage in that car was a bigger hit on my pocket of course; but outside of it not been as quick on the initial pickup, the 6 twin turbo holds its own when you need the power. I do find that the 640 engine is all I need, and it does not leave me wanting more in the speed department; and as an added bonus, it cuts down significantly, the Gas station stops compare to my previes V8.
Hope this helps.
