no oil pressure

Hello,

I have a 06' 530i with 146k miles with no oil pressure currently. I checked pressure with a manual guage and it showed no pressure. Can I replace the oil pump myself and if so how? I am currently in mechanic school. Or is it advisable to just take it to the dealership or other certified BMW mechanic?

Thank You

If there truly is no oil pressure you would need to have it towed to a mechanic or dealer (I'd suggest mechanic since the dealer will just look at you and your situation and start planning his kids Harvard degree).

If I am not mistaken, oil pan needs to be dropped to access the oil pump. The remove the oil pan, you will need to remove the cradle/cross members or raise the engine. If I were you, I'd look for a competent independent mechanic.

If you really have no pressure (i.e, you're sure it's not just the sensor) it could be a number of things besides the pump itself, for instance, it could be sludge build-up or a blocked intake tube/screen. But if you drove for any distance in that state, you need to decide how much money you want to sink in to an 8-year old engine with 150K miles. The lack of oil may have done serious damage to the engine, especially the valve train. Just something to consider...
