Want to put an M3 LSD in my 328is
Hi guys, as the title says, I would like to put an M3 LSD in my '96 328is. I know where I can source a used one and I will rebuild the internals myself with new bearings all around and new gears if needed and set it up to factory spec. My main questions are: What years can I use? Is it bolt on, plug and play? Do I need to change the driveshaft and half shafts or anything else? And, most importantly, is it worth my effort as far as performance gains or handling? Thanks in advance

How many differentials have you rebuilt in the past?

I wouldn't attempt to rebuild. What ZeGerman is getting at. These require extremely tight tolerances and can be had for about $300 in good working order.
I love having the LSD in my 328i. I've never driven without it, so I'm not sure about gains.

More than twenty but never a BMW. I have all the tools and equipment in my garage to remove and reinstall the bearings, check the gear patterns and set the pinion depth and what not. It cant be too much different plus the FSM should take you through it step by step. I can also buy one from a recycler and just install it but I'm not sure if it is bolt on or if I have to change driveshaft, half shafts or do anything else. BMW is new to me and so far I have been pleasantly surprised at how straght forward things on this car seem. Thanks

I'd spend $3-400 in a heart beat for a reliable one that is just plug and play.

They go for around $300 all day. Look at the classified section at bimmerforums.com
