iPhone 5 And USB Audio Issues

Just got a 2009 335i (non-iDrive) two weeks ago, and since day one I have not been able to listen to music from the USB port located under the armrest compartment. I know it cannot be done using bluetooth, which work flawlessly for calls, but I would prefer using only one cable instead of two cables (Apple white USB cable to charge the phone/ audio cable). Any suggestion?

Hondo,
How did you do it? Should I take it to the dealer or buy a software/media?

I don't remember where on the e90 thread this was posted, but I think the Y cable is the way to go.

I took mine to the BMW place, you might can do it yourself but they ended up clearing all the codes in the car and updating all the software, so it was worth the 250 bucks

Guys regarding the Y-cable, I'm using an iPhone 5 and i have the lightning to USB Cable. I don't think I need the Y-cable since a USB . Even when the cable is plugged in the screen shows "insert". I think I'm gonna take it to he BMW place and have those people update the system. Thanks for your help folks!

Let me stop you there before you go spend $250.. Apple makes a lightning to 30-pin adapter and they sell it for only $30, saving you a whopping $220!

I dont think his problem is just the cable, the 250 is for reprogramming the head unit in the car, try pluging in an Ipod not an Iphone, I dont think it will work using an Iphone

again try an Ipod first and if you see the Ipod when you hit the audio button then it is working

I-Pods, I-phones and such require the Y-cable. Sucks to have to buy it just for this but it's true. This along with the lightning adapter mentioned earlier is the solution. If it doesn't work, simply return the y-cable.

You can find aftermarket versions of the Y-cable on ebay. Can't speak as to how well they work, but they will save you some $$$.

A few folk her have reported success with a y-cable that you can get on monoprice.com. Their prices are always ridiculously low.

I have a 2011 335 convertible (e93). I plugged in my iphone 5 using just the Apple lightning cable and it plays music perfectly. I do have the HK radio.

I have a 2011 and did not need a y-cable. The cable that came with my iphone worked when plugged into the usb port in the center console. I do not know what kind of radio i have but is says bmw professional.

If I remember correctly, if you have a Combox you don't need a Y cable. If you don't have a Combox you do. Dividing line I believe is 10/2010 production date.

.
