Here's the latest on my transmission issue. I picked up the X3 from the dealer on Saturday. They had it for another week and transmitted the vehicle data to BMW (again) and the data did show abnormalities in its operation. The BMW field engineer advised adding an additional 300ml of transmission oil, which they did. The SA said the engineer felt the oil level was "a bit low" and that the 8 speed in the X3 sometimes requires more oil than stated. They road tested it for about 120 miles and reported no problems.

So, to date, they've rebooted the software and added additional oil. The problem came out of the blue as a sudden loss of low gears and reverse, and after the software reboot, sudden lurching while stopped. It seems unlikely to me that the cause of these sudden problems (after 4,000 miles) would be due to not enough transmission oil as filled at the factory, but we'll see.

LOL You would be surprised what BMW would constitute a buy back situation. Ive heard from a friend of a friend, that a Dashboard Rattle that couldn't be rectified earned this person a buy back, and a new replacement.

Good luck with this.
