E30 (1982 - 1993)
God's Chariot. The E30 was produced primarily from 1982 through 1991. The cabriolet was the one exception which was produced through 1993. |

New/used rack and pinion installed - proper toe in amount?
My second boneyard rack installed. First at about 260K, lasted about 115K. The good news is I now know that E30 convertibles are good for something after all: used parts. The odo was missing but the interior looked good and the boots on the rack were clean and pristine looking: no leakage - rack or engine.
Works great and I needed that sucker. Was leaking fluid big time. Not the most enjoyable job. Oh well, I could always buy a new car. I know that some toe in is needed. I can't find info on what figure is optimal. Anybody know? I could always break down and spend the funds for a real alignment. OTOH, I'm a cheapskate and the car is old. Tracks really nicely. I did the old measuring from side to side on the front and back side of tires, just hooked the tape on the innermost tread - the back side measurement is 3/16ths more than the front. The distance apart of the tape location was about 16 inches, my trig tells me that each wheel is .34 degree from parallel. Very approx. figure.

i like dead nuts on my e30 but ran a lower camber. so say 0degrees toe, -5degrees camber.

I was under the impression that camber is not available to be adjusted at least w/o major modifications. My reading has that the front wheels running parallel will lead to wander.

my car was dropped and i was able to raise and lower it with spacers.
toe mainly helps with traction under accel and decel. most of the time it only really effects fwd/awd cars. rwd dont really need toe as a dd, but track a lil toe in helps turn in

We just did the rack a few days ago as well, and here are the alignment reports, if it helps any.
