vinyl wrap your a/b/c pillars & chrome window trim
finally worked on an e30 other than mine. so the B/C pillars were completely oxidized and turning chalky, wrapped them up with Oracal 970ra matte black (more of a satin black) and now they look brand new! also did the chrome strip along the top of the door panel on the inside, they were pretty chipped up and stuff too. great easy cheap fix to make your e30 look more up to date. total job time was 1.5hrs, owner is diggin it! Wu! Wraps

How much does something like that cost because my convertible could use that done to it.

i assume your talking about the chrome trim around the windows right? if so, i usually charge around $150-$200ish for that stuff here in seattle wa. iono what guys in your area would charge. look for a highend tint/clear bra shop to do the work. typically your neighborhood sign and graphics shop will not do this type of job.

or $15 for paint and tape to mask the parts off and have them looking new.

yes that's also 1 way of doing it. works great for non chrome surfaces like the door pillars on a coupe/sedan. paint is not so great for chrome window trim on the vert like Wolfy is referring to.

If you sand it, prime it, and paint it then it sticks just fine

What's your technique for cutting the vinyl after you stretch it? I have done this and it always looks great until I cut it. No matter how hard I try I always end up with a couple of weird sections

sounds like tape, sanding, and paint is def another option for this look. good to know that it will stick well to chrome after some light sanding!
adjmcloon: the key is not to stretch it too much, and when you do stretch it u must heat it up real good so the vinyl looses its memory (ability to shrink back). you just gotta kinda know how much to heat it, hard to explain... but then you let it cool a bit so its not all soft before you cut it. maybe wait like 1min or so. cut your material, then go over the exposed edge again with the heat gun (called post heating). for the window trim parts on the e30 you should not be really stretching the vinyl at all. its such a flat surface that you just soften it up and work it around the edges. |
