E36 trailer project

Hope this is the right place for this thread....I just joined the forum and look forward to sharing my project with you guys.....

Ive started a project for my E91.....a nice little E36 with no front end is giving up its parts to help me make a cool little trailer out of it. Ive seen one or two of these made by other Bimerphiles and really like everything about them....

For several reasons, after giving up the gas guzzling pick up truck, I decided on a small wagon...BMW makes a great little E91, but how do I get all my stuff around now with much less room....Roof rack is in the works as well as a Cargo box, but for more room, I need a utility trailer. Now, with the Bimmer, I need a utility trailer with style!

so heres my idea:

and a little sketch:

I have the donor car pretty much stripped out...(parts for sale in the classified section to help fund the project!) and started making my first cuts last night:

This will be a fun project...and I was happy to recycle the old 325...better than it going to the scrap heap!

chime in with ideas and opinions.....Im still in the fabrication stage and could use some good ideas for the front panel......

thanks!

JP

Could you turn the hood around and use it for the main lid?.

Awesome! I'll be watching this one for sure!

Any errors in this post are purely Swype's fault, not mine.

If I had one, yes!....I will probably be making one from something found....like an S-10 cab rear panel....or a suburban tailgate...or a bimmer hood....or something! I would like it to have some structural integrity....so if I use a small tail gate, for instance, the structure will be built in...saving me tons of fabrication time.

First cuts!....

wow it looks really different now!.....All in all it went well....The Sawzall is your friend for this one...I cut above the lines to leave myself extra material in case I need it.....Now all thats left is the floor....maybe tonight....

Im keeping the larger part of the roof panel for sheetmetal and may end up using other off cuts for structure....

Im going to start a running tally on costs and try to sell the parts I have saved off the car to help fund this wacky project......

So far I have had the following costs:

Donor Car: 200.00
Trailer plug: 25.00
Diesel Fuel: 50.00
Hinges: 25.00
Sawsall blades: 15.00

Total so far: 315.00

I will have the following future costs:

trailer tongue material: 100.00
Tires: 100.00
Tail lights: 50.00
stabilizer jacks: 30.00
Trailer tongue wheel: 40.00

Future costs for the above: 300.00

Additional costs include sheet metal, primer, paint, bondo, and a host of other items like DOT inspection, registration, plates, ect......

It certainly adds up....Hope I can sell some of those extra parts!

I will definitely be able to recoup about 100.00 at the scrap yard......

thanks for looking!

Ha ha, the Passat I bought came with a nice little "rebate", but it was all in pennies so I passed the savings on to the guy I sold it too .

I got a ton of pennies with an E34, left in the door panel where they were for a few months cuz I didn't know what to do with them. Had to go to court for a ticket and they CHARGED for parking......found my perfect use.

thanks for all the comments, guys!.....

Ill post all my successes and mistakes as I go along...at least if you want to build one of your own....you can see what NOT to do!.....I took up welding as a hobby last year and will be working on my technique as well as welding quite a bit on this trailer.....If you guys have any ideas for the front panel...well its got me kinda stumped...I was thinking of using a very simple belt line running across the midpoint with a kidney grille mounted in the center....but Im totally up for other ideas......

the panel across the front, you mean?? hmmm...the firewall would be my first suggestion for at least a panel to fit across the front. you could modify that to accept grille kidneys and whatever to make it look like a front end.

Okay...some real progress made last night....NOW its beginning to look like something.

Ill have to back the wagon up to it to get an idea for the final tongue length...that and to make sure body lines look good...this may also help me figure out what the heck to do with the front panel....

couple of more interesting shots;

thanks for looking!..
