Painted E92 Side Reflectors - Which One?

Hi All,

Looking through the forum, it looks like a few people have swapped out their unsightly amber side reflectors on the wheel wells for painted ones. (For example: http://www.modbargains.com/Body_Colo...92_3Series.htm)

What I haven't been able to find out so far is which painted reflectors you guys feel are the best quality in terms of color fitment.

Obviously there's no paint blending with any of these, but in general, are the ModBargains ones identical to the ones one could buy from Bimmian or others, and which ones have you found to be the best?

Papa,

I have no idea what ModBargains has to offer. What I do know is that mine are Bimmians purchased from JSLevi Streetwerks. Once you get over freaking out about how thin the plastic lip of the fender really is and how fragile it seems once you remove the ugly orange reflector, the fit is a piece of cake. The biggest thing I notice about the replacements is that they did not come with the clear coat finish that is integral to BMW's paint process. In other words, the paint match is very good from a hue standpoint, but the factory clear coat adds depth and luster and especially with the metallic colors brings out the fleck. In fact if I remember correctly from my visit to the Regensburg plant, the metallic fleck only comes to life when the clear coat is applied. I am sure much of this is color dependent, but with regard to Space Gray, the Bimmian reflector inserts pass the 5-6 foot test with regard to color match. At the 2-3 foot mark the lack of clear coat luster becomes more apparent when the sun is hitting it just right. One of these days, when I have absolutely nothing better to do with $500, I'm going to take my car to a local top end body/paint shop and have them tune it all in perfectly. Until then, only the nitpicky 0.1% like me are going to pick it apart.

For reference, go look at the pic I posted in the First E93 of Spring thread. It should give you a decent idea of what the Bimmian reflector inserts look like in real life.

Thanks Kat, that's very helpful! I'll look around for a bit still. Makes you wonder why they wouldn't clear coat the piece, though!

Mod Bargains claim to be oem so for fitment that's what you want as for Bimmian I heard through the grape vine that they do have fitment issues so if that's the case cross em off.

I don't know if Umnitza sells them anymore, but the 'black' side reflectors that I ordered from them were extremely fragile and broke very easily as I tried to install them on my E46 M3...they cracked very easily.

Painted reflectors are definitely one of the first mods most enthusiast add to their cars. The orange reflectors definitely take away from the overall look of the front end of these cars. Getting body color matched painted reflectors are one of the cheapest ways to give the car a more uniformed and sporty look. We only use genuine BMW OEM reflectors and have it color matched with OEM paint. The pieces are painted and clear coated to protect the finish from UV rays/etc. Fitment is guaranteed and you will have no issues!

I got some a while back for about $3 a piece, can't remember where I got them, was 2011, but it was a BMW internet mail-order shop. They came in clear or smoke are an excellent fit & looked to be exact copies of the BMW units. No reason they could not be sprayed with duplicolor & clear coated. I just left mine smoked because the car is gray & added smoked side markers.

I guess I'm the odd ball here; I think the amber reflectors look great (depending on the car color - I adore it on the blue).

But couldn't you use a rattle can clear coat if that's the only issue? Sorry for being slightly ignorant, but I've heard this working for other applications though.

Hmm. Verts4Ever, just saw that clear color. Any pictures of it on blue? I guess I could crank out photoshop here in a few though.

These are the only one I know of... http://www.bimmerfest.com/forums/sho...5&postcount=28

Bear's pics of his smoked reflectors are in the same thread, about 10 posts after.

Thanks bud. It's probably better that it doesn't though, since I tend to enjoy arguing with people who make statements they can't factually support and I'd have mucho neg reps.

Yep that's it bought a few sets to try out. In real life they are not as dark as in the picture & are actually reflectors not just solid panels.

Painted E92 Side Reflectors - Which One?

Getting tint/clear wrap today on my new E93 M3 and the installer suggested I do something about my reflectors. I'd considered it before as most people on here seem to consider it a must have. Also, during ED at nürburgring it gave away the fact that my car was US spec faster than the tourist plates did.

However, when I look at pics, having the matching paint reflector stick out from the bumper just looks odd, like something is missing like the buttons under my radio with no function (yes, minor OCD over here). I haven't seen the painted reflectors in person though. My tint guy suggested going smoke or clear. I think the smoked looks too aggressive for my tan on interlagos blue vert. Anyone have clear reflectors or any other solutions on your E9x, especially with blue paint?

Not blue, but pics of clear as requested. With some daylight. And when it's darker with what is probably flash from camera, forgive blurriness. I was really lucky I caught these when they were cheap as $3 I think it was at ECS. Never seen them again on sale like that since, they may not even carry them anymore.

We have and really like the clear reflectors on our E93, but it's Platinum Bronze.

Photos of a blue E90 with clear reflectors can be found here... http://www.bimmerfest.com/forums/sho...5&postcount=28. Just my opinion, but I think the combo looks pretty good.

Cheers.

Might put the clear back on mine...have the smoke set on now. Bought a few sets & never saw them for $3 again.
