Battery cable recall

At my dealership doing my 30k service and opted to do the cable recall as well. Unfortunately it's like a 3 hr project, glad I brought my IPad!

Looks like there is no ECU flash associated with this recall in case some are wondering, as I think I had read somewhere on line that it was.

1 hr left but at least I have comfortable seating, good coffee & muffins, and 3 very large screen TVs, if I could only get them to shut FOX off.

More information for those of you who may not have been aware of this.

"BMW is recalling almost 570,000 cars in the U.S. and Canada because a battery cable connector can fail and cause the engines to stall.

The recall affects popular 3-Series sedans, wagons, convertibles and coupes from the 2007 through 2011 model years. Also included are 1-Series coupes and convertibles from 2008 through 2012, and the Z4 sports car from 2009 through 2011.

The cable connectors and a fuse box terminal in the cars can degrade over time, and that can break the electrical connection between the trunk-mounted battery and the fuse box at the front. If that happens, the cars could lose electrical power, causing the engines to stall unexpectedly, the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said in documents posted on its website Saturday.

The company says in documents sent to NHTSA that the problem stems from movement between the battery cable and the fuse box.

BMW says it knows of one minor collision in Canada due to the problem, but no injuries.

The German automaker says dealers will replace the battery cable connector and secure it for free. It will start notifying owners in March.

The 3-Series is BMW's most popular car in the U.S., dominating the small luxury car market. The company sold nearly 100,000 of them in the U.S. last year.

The recall affects more than 504,000 cars in the U.S. and another 65,000 in Canada.

BMW, Toyota and other automakers have experienced large recalls in recent years because they use common parts on multiple models in order to save money.

Owners can call BMW with questions at (800) 525-7417."

Inspect the work when they're done. They left a bunch of stuff around my glovebox loose, had to go back.

I do but this is a BMW related website - no?

But I will offer this, If you're looking for advise on day trading practices may I suggest Reminiscences of a Stock Operator by Edwin Lefevre as a very good start to understanding trader behavioral habits. Then go for the current stuff.

Some kind of silver connection swap out for a corrosive one. I guess new models already have the silver connector cable & termination. Really no big deal just time consuming.

Not looking for advice, been doing it for a few years now. Just cool to see a fellow trader on the board. Now back to BMWs...

On my own accord I called my dealership today. I have yet to receive a recall notice, but I proactively made an appointment and they scheduled me for Wednesday. The young female gave a similar story of the process taking 3 hours to complete.

I might go next door and test drive a Subaru BRZ to kill some time.

I lucked out as my dealer has a Ferrari dealership across the street and Mclaren next door. It was a fun 3 hours.

Haven't received mine yet. I wonder what the delay is. I figured the mothership's super computer would spit out all affected VIN #'s and get those notices out. The month's half over already.

Oh, cool! Nice to see a few of us left after the bubble, but frankly it's been pretty easy of late just playing diamonds, spiders and ETFs. But now is where the real challenge begins and stock picking will be truly an art of in/out and stop loss being your best friend.

And now, back to our regular scheduled programming.

If it's a three hour procedure, won't the dealer(s) provide a loaner?

Had mine done while in for a squeaky/chirpy AC blower and transmission clutch check. Left with the dealer for two days.

Took mine in to have the summer wheel set balanced and to get an alignment. They told me of the recall so I said sure.

I had noticed some electrical power issues, but just assumed my five year old battery was dying a slow death.

I brought the car in at 8 and was out by 11:45. That wait time includes the wheel balance and alignment.

As you all probably know, the long wait time is because the cable is a long one, the old one has to be fished out of the body and the new one fished in.

I got a new battery which I'll pop in and register myself later. $200 with the BMWCCA discount.

Never received a letter to the best of my knowledge, but own an '09 328i. Should I take it to the dealer or will they give me sh*t if I don't have letter?

The cable is actually only a foot long or so, but they do have to take apart a lot of the dash and trim around the fusebox and pull the fusebox to remove the old cable, then they pull it out enough to cut a foot off it and they crimp on the new section and heat shrink it, then reinstall to the fusebox with the support bracket on it.

They don't actually pull out the whole cable to the battery, but it is a pain to get to and to replace.

Just make an appointment and take it in...they have the database of VIN to verify your car is or isn't affected, and whether or not the recall work was ever done by a previous owner.

This. They just replace the faulty end behind the dash.
