Nail in tire

Today I noticed I have a nail in my tire. Since these are run-flats on my 2013 x3, most places wouldn't patch it (even the dealer who said I'd have to buy a $400 new tire). Good thing was it was a Goodyear LS2 and I found a GoodYear repair shop that would patch it for $25.
Now a lot of things could have complicated this, if I was 1 inch off it would have punctured the sidewall which couldn't have been patched. Also if I had more miles on my car they tell me I would have to replace all 4 and not one which would be a good $1600. That said, now I'm curious about tire insurance. Anyone got it? These damn run-flats seem just like a waste now.

I plan on getting it for this reason but I think it can only be purchased when u pick up the car at the dealer. Atleast that's what the dealers have told me as I wait for my car.

Why must u replace all 4 at the same time? Would they have forced u to replace all four?

I had a flat at 4K miles. called the dealer- told me to bring it in, and they would repair it. Brought it in, and the service mgr said run flats can't be repaired. $400 new tire. 4K miles later, a huge bolt in the tread of another tire while in the mountains.- took it to a tire store there, and they repaired it at no charge (#?!).

Just replace with regular tires, better ride and last longer. If you worry about getting emergency flats, get AAA roadside assistance which is only $50 per year.

Check to see if GOodyear has runflat warranty for new tires less than a year old. They may replace it for free. Pirelli swapped mine out after a puncture. You dealer will swear they know nothing about this so research and show it in writing.

I have it and on my last 3 BMW's it has paid for itself each time due to nails, etc. At most dealerships you CAN buy it after purchase from your Service Advisor.

My dealer said the BMW-offered policy could not be purchased after the vehicle is delivered but that another 3rd party policy was available. One difference was that Winter wheels/tires were not covered under the latter one and interestingly I think it had no deductible (but I never got a price on it). YMMV, depending on what is offered at your dealer. I went with the 5-yr BMW policy and I know it's a gamble that I might lose.

Dont you mean you are glad you did not buy the tire insurance for $1500. How many $25 tire repair to break even for the cost of the tire insurance? 60 patch jobs, do you think you will have 60 flat tires in 5 years? If your thread is low, you only need to change two tires on the same axle. If your thread is low enough that you need 4 new tires, then its probably time for new tires anyways.

Goodyear shop won't offer tire insurance on tires > $300. At least that's what they told me.
I read from a few places before I went to the shop and they confirmed its all about tread wear. If below a certain amount then cause its AWD, all 4 need to be replaced or it will screwup your center differential. Otherwise,if not much wear, 1can be replaced.
As far as replace with all non-run flats. I wanted to do that, but those guys said BMW and other companies issued statements last year to all tire places that this is not recommended as the cars are calibrated with run flats and will jeopardize the safety of the vehicle. So the shop will do it, but they void all the warranties when they are asked by the customer when they do so.

I have the insurance and am sorry I bought it for my 2011 X3. I have had a couple of patches done at a tire dealer and only had the papers with me for one of them which saved me a whopping $25. My front ones are pretty worn and I asked the SA why the 2 front ones have worn out on both outer edges. This would appear to be underinflation but the TPM keeps that under control. The SA informed me it was driving on curvy roads but did not recommend rotation. Really!? The factory tires are Pirelli RFTs and I am going with something else next time. Anyone with experience with Bridgestone? I am also not buying from the dealer.

Sounds like a front wheel alignment issue. If you have 17" rims, get the Michelin Primacy ZP MXM4, they are probably the best oem tires for the X3.

Lot's of good info here on RFTs but I am wondering about tire pressure. Do all of you follow the mfgs recommendation posted on the vehicle? On my Buick Riviera I always run with higher pressure than recommended because GM suggests lower pressure for a softer more comforatable ride trading off on tire life.

Any recommendations on how you handle tire pressure?

I use the recommended 32/35.

For day to day, I typically run +2 over the door sticker.
