I repoed one a few years back and drove it a bit.

The car was just a brute off the line and scary fast on the highway.

Seemed a little nose heavy and honestly wasn't as fun to drive as the Bimmer's I've had.

Better budget for lots of new tires

You should ask on five series or M forums. It does not compete with any three series. The 335i is heavy but is still 300lbs lighter

The M5, E Class AMG etc are an odd segment. Lots of power but too much bulk to be a sports car. I'd boost a used a 335i for the power and pickup a new E350 diesel (or used E320 diesel)

Oh yeah, good point. They've always depreciated super fast.. SL cars depreciate like bricks too. An AMG SL does ~$180K ->~$40K in about five years IIRC

Google cost of repairs to that hand build AMG engine before pulling the trigger..

The cost of AMG parts is higher than regular parts. I don't recall any major issues with the 5.5L engines back when I frequented the MB forums (the 6.3s do have some issues that will pop up after your warranty runs out).

Either way, the W211 body is right at the end of where I think MB made reliable-ish cars so it could be a roll of the dice as to whether it will fall apart or be a dream.
