740 iL will not crank

I have a 1998 740 iL that will not crank. The starter has been checked and the ignition switch has been changed. The lights on the dashboard comes on when I turn the key but it seems that no fire is getting to the switch. If anyone knows what the problem may be, I'd greatly appreciate any advice.

Hey, if there is anything I can do, I spend hours at work researching no start threads, and have read almost every one on the web, so I will try to help...

What's the story?

I am having the same problem among many others but if you have had battery problems or if it has sat with a dead battery for a period of time from what I have read there is a good chance that the ews is out of sync with the dme. If you have tried to start it with either of those modules unhooked at any givin time you for sure have to re-sync the two, or at least this is what I have been told or have read. Hope this helps

Use a long screw driver and go under the car turn ignition on and place the driver between the two poles on the starter to bridge it and it will crank for sure. If not u will have found the issue . Also if u needed an oil changed badly and left the car without starting for a long time then the gunk in the engine has locked the pistons and that means bye bye.

Wen u bridge the starter it will spark a bit so don't get scared just hold it in place until it starts.

I have been battling a no start in two feet of snow!

Also, if you have a multi meter or even a test light, check the hot wire to the starter, there are two and there is a quick connect, it is nice to know if the car is 'ordering' a start.

+1 on the screwdriver trick.

No there is no signal being sent to the starter.I think I might be getting close to an answer though. I will post it in the next thread.
