Windshield Bullseye

Just got my first rock hit on my windshield this weekend, its about the size of a quarter, I will get it repaired, question is if I replace the windshield should I go to BMW place or a glass shop and can they get OEM windshield, any suggestions are welcome

I used aftermarket (Safelight) and they did a wonderful job on the installation and the rain-sensor etc fro about 1/3rd of dealer cost. Only consideration is that if you're in a lease and go the aftermarket route, BMW will charge you for the cost of an OEM windshield at turn-in.

I went to BMW and pretty sure they used Safelite and then upcharged me. Luckily it's covered by insurance. You should see if your insurance company charges.

OEM windshields are usually Pilkington. You can get them from some aftermarket installers. I can't believe BMW will charge for a non-Pilk windshield on turn-in as long as the aftermarket unit has all the same stuff on it. I mean, what are they going to do, charge for non-BMW sparkplugs, tires and oil too?

Unless he's just really bad you will barely be able to see where it was and you'll never have an issue with it.

You really don't want OEM anyway, it's too soft, and you'll more than likely get a nice chip 5 minutes into some highway driving...which will piss you off quite a bit. Believe me.

Good grief, there are at least THREE federal standards (FMVSS) that Safelite would have to adhere to for windshields...and I'm quite sure they're on top of this:

FMVSS 205...Glazing materials
FMVSS 212...Windshield mounting
FMVSS 219...Windshield Zone Intrusion (you don't get thrown through the windshield)

Oh...and that the windshield is marked with "DOT."

Just when you thought the feds were asleep at the switch!

Of course BMW's standards can "exceed" the federal safety standards (federal standards are considered "minimum" standards). If the "rain sensor" doesn't work with the Safelite windshield you may have a problem.

If a "lease" read the lease contract for "replacement" items!!

Hello Hondo. Just be aware, glass installers, insurance companies, and other involved parties will play semantics with you until your head spins. This is over the terms "OE" and "OEM". They are not the same. If you want factory glass (the same glass new 3'ers are coming off the line with), make sure you understand these 2 terms. Good luck

well the glass guy did the repair, its better but I can still see the crack, so now he is going to give me a price to replace the glass, so I will see how bad I want the crack gone

no, he has a shop I take it to, and usually he tells me to keep the doors cracked 24 hours, he wanted me to leave it, but I told him I have a warehouse I can park the car in overnight, so I get there at 9;45 in the morning, he said it would take 2 hours to replace it, then I will keep the windows rolled down drive to my office and park the car in the warehouse and then drive my 4 runner till friday

The purpose of the repair is to save the glass so the crack doesn't spread. Just get it repaired and save your time and money on replacing the entire windshield. Chances are it'll happen again. Unfortunately I've had several cracks in a span of 6 months and got it repaired each time.
