Oh my: Mercedes releases first images of 2014 S Class

Edit: added exterior pictures.

I have to say I am very impressed and am looking forward to seeing more. Interested to hear the opinions of current 7 series owners.

Although it is a good looking car from the outside, I am not very impressed with the evolutionary design of the exterior. I really loved the rear fender flares in the old model that have been taken away. Hopefully there will be a more aggressive AMG variant. From the pictures alone I prefer the current 2013 M-Sport with full LED's, but will reserve final judgment for when I am able to see the car in person.

Sorry for the sloppy short post. Trying to get used to this new phone.

I saw that too, but the 2 spoke steering wheel is just so ugly.

That looks quite nice.

I agree with ^^. The steering wheel design is terrible.

1- Steering wheel (horrible)

I have to agree. The interior as a whole looks like something that would be offered in the $200,000 plus range. The ambiance is breathtaking. Interested to hear member Deutch's opinion in this regard.

One of my first thoughts was that the lease deals would make a lot of the 7's look cheap.

Didn't notice the steering wheel until you mentioned it, but I have to say I like it. It looks very nice with the wood trim in this spy shot taken a while back.

I agree with the points in bold. Not a fan of the exterior sides from what I can see in the pictures. The old side were masculine; the new looks soft and subdued.

Like the flow of the interior but not a big fan of exterior. Agree it just looks like a Maybach. Biased obviously but don't think I would give up my 7 for that.

This car is just stunning inside/out!

Minus the steering wheel, that is at least from the looks. My wife actually prefers holding the steering wheel at the bottom. Go figure.

BMW needs to step up it's game with the 7.

That said, the car properly spec'd will be at least $125k, so quite a bit more that 7-series

Since I have owned 3 S-Classes (3 generations), I am a very big fan on the S....generally I like it more than the past 7 Series models. I think this all new S-Class will be cutting edge in terms of technology and safety. I will not dispute, or say anything negative about Mercedes and their strengths. I do really dislike the dual screens. Too gadgety and does not fit the richness of an S-Class. What I love about Bentley, Rolls Royce is that they have entered the 21st Century, yet they have retained their refined, beautiful and elegant analog instruments, aided with some LCD technology. This new S-Class is too much, in terms of screens and technology. Why do people still want Rolex, Breitling, Piaget, Patek Phillipe and not a Sanyo or Casio (or even an "expensive") digital watch??? For me, the same goes for cars. If this is how Mercedes and BMW will be going, I will have to stay with German owned, BRITISH cars for a while. Or Porsche...they always keep real instruments. I want and demand real instruments. Just my thing!!

I'll be curious to see what it looks like in the AMG trim. The interior is beautiful (wonder if that quilting is only available as part of the Designo line), but not sure about the exterior. Interesting to note that the new S will come in various forms including coupe, cabriolet, long wheelbase (Maybach replacement), and short wheelbase, along with myriad engine choices. While the looks may be good, the driving experience is yet to be determined. Typically, Mercedes sedans tend to be more for the "cushy" crowd, so time will tell what type of sporting characteristics will be part of the new S. I'm still more of a BMW guy, and always will be.

Not bad IMO...kind of reminds me of the Maybach from the 3/4 rear view.

I agree with all the Maybach comparisons.

The profile seems very E-class to me. Agree with DB, the w221 was more masculine looking.

In person, I'm sure it will be appealing.

Also for some reason the grill reminds me of a c300

I really like the interior like said I above its probably the designo interior. The exterior looks like a new E class and CL had a baby. Can't say it's appealing to me at all.

I'm a huge fan of this car, I think they nailed the design and should be very successful with it. I'm glad they finally captured a cohesive design language that they seemed to lack in the 2010-2013 time frame...especially trying to jump on the LED bandwagon. The interior of this car just raised the bar for Audi and especially BMW. I'm really surprised by the extensive use of hard plastics in my 7. Still love the BMW 7 though.

I can certainly say that the new SL took some getting used, but I now like it quite a bit better.
We bought one a few weeks back and this thing is a great taste of the latest Mercedes tech and performance.

It's very fast and easily tunable (Most mags tested the stock SL550 at 3.9 to 4.1sec to 60 and that's exactly how it feels like, compared to our old SL600), with better fuel mileage, this car now makes the last SL's classic design feel dated.

The amount of plastics in the 7 really sucks. I'm reminded of their presence every time I run over a speed bump in my parking garage and hear something, somewhere making a noise.

Re: SL - awesome car. I still like the headlights of the outgoing model better, but the rest of the car is generally perfect for a large hard top convertible. I was pretty close to leasing one in 2011, but knew I'd need a 2nd vehicle because of the space limitations and didn't feel like dealing with that.

Agree with you on the AMG trim. I couldn't imagine buying an S-Class without the AMG package (same with the current model) and the car will look more aggressive.

That said, from what I can see is that this is a very substantial looking car with great presence. Interior-wise, it could be Designo or a 600 interior. The rear headrests definitely remind me of the Maybach ones, which were down filled (best head rests in any car I have experienced).

The reference to a Maybach isn't a bad thing (at least from the back). Never could stand the front or some of the side panel design, the car itself was a delight to drive (had a new 57 at my disposal for a week).

Looking forward to the driving impressions myself, but with the ABC suspension it can be quite taut.

Seriously, huh?? In my 2010 750i and 2012 AH7...I could not believe some of the noises I would hear going over a speed bump, very poorly surfaced road and going into, or out of a driveway at an angle (chassis being flexed...torsional rigidity). It sounded sometimes like an East German Trabant!!!

Our 2007 750Li, oddly did not have any of these awful plastic sounds, and the interior plastics and materials seemed much richer, heavier and not "cost cutted".

Our 3 S-Classes NEVER had cheap, plastic sounds....even as the first S-Class aged (it was a long wheelbase 1996 S500), it still felt honestly as tight as when it was new, even though it was 6-7 years old and had over 60,000+ miles on the odo.

SADLY!!!! My 2012 Rolls Royce Ghost made horrible sounds over speed bumps, poorly surfaced roads and going in and out of driveways. When this happened, those were the times that I was slapped in the face, and reminded The Ghost is 100% 7 Series based

Wow that's really sad to hear about the RR Ghost... especially at that price point. I would expect that car to make absolutely no noise, obviously they didn't deliver. My 2012 AH7 is mostly silent, but on big bumps it does make some plasticy noises.
