Mein Auto: 2004 545i manual
my first bmw a 2004 545i

Hey I wasn't even in the market for a BMW but this one fell in my lap and its so nice compared to my last one its unreal! It's a 2004 545i manual with 118,000 miles guy before me spent in service fees over the life of the car what I paid for the vehicle. I'm looking to find a spare key without having to give a lot to the dealer any suggestions? Got it Sunday still feels like I stole it its so nice! Click image for larger version

Very nice ride! Very clean! Being that your car is a 2004, you don't have to deal with Comfort Access, so you should easily be able to grab a blank key/remote from Ebay and just have the dealer program it to your car. That'll save a little bit...

Called BMW of Nashville and they said I cannot use a blank key off eBay that I have to get one thru the dealership and it cost $250 is that true?

No, that is not true, of course they will tell you that so you pay them only. I'd buy the key from eBay, then go to another dealer and say "hey, I bought this car, but this key seems to have lost it's programming somehow" - they can program it and you should be fine.

I tried it too. Didn't work for me either. Good luck finding a dealer to do this programming -- unless he's a personal friend or a relative.

wrong wrong wrong

You cannot use the keys off eBay. Have to go to the dealer for these.

(or if I'm completely wrong, I'd certainly love to know. I'm about to spend $200 on a new key from the local dealer)

Congrats! I had to go through the dealer for the key; cost me $200. I did the programming myself, I will post the instructions if I can find them.

Very nice car. Same as the one I bought last month. Tip: Add the reflectors on the back bottom to give it a newer look.....they cost less than $30 for the pair at the dealer.

It appears from your rear picture that the slits near the bottom of the rear bumper have the black plastic insert instead of the red reflectors that later model years came with. Mine also had black inserts and I picked up the reflectors from the dealer and swapped them out. Upgrades the appearance, that's all.

Does anyone know if it's possible to buy a blank key with a blank transponder and program the car key yourself? I have a BMW 545i 2005. if not, know anyone able to program it in southern California? I'm getting mixed messages on whether or not it can be done.

Thanks for the help guys

AFAIK, no. Just take it to a dealer--sorry, I haven't seen any success stories of getting a new key any other way

I have seen success with eBay keys, but with a caveat: I know people that got eBay keys then got them coded by a dealer tech doing after hours side work, ended up costing them about $100 total. As with anything else, if you can get a hook up, you're golden.

Do you know anyone in Southern California who can do it?
