battery replacement question

Hi Guys, I have a light out on my 2007 e92, so I called for an appointment and figured at the same time I would check the battery. According to the records I am still on the factory battery. Quoted around three hundred to replace and program battery to car. Is that an unusual price in either direction? Should I change it even though there is no sign of battery problems I guess it is seven years old, I live two hours from the dealer. Can anyTtom Dick or Harry put in the battery or do I really need to go thru BMW. thanks for your input and I am sorry if this has been covered a few times in the past. Also I can not find the out light to correspond with the dash message. Is there a way for the car to tell me what light is out? No Idrive system. Thanks Catch

It's entirely possible, although very unlikely, that you'll get another year or two out of the battery. While the car is in for service, they can check the health of the battery and determine if it should be replaced or not. $300 sounds about right from a dealer. However, you may be able to find a local indy shop that can do it cheaper. Any competent shop that is familiar with BMWs can register the new battery to the car.

If the quote is for the proper OEM battery with installation and registration, $300 is quite reasonable. And since registration is necessary, I'd have the dealer or a well trained indy do it.

It's a good price, my dealer wanted $410 for a battery and install. My Indy mechanic charged $300.

I am not a mechanic guy, but I use this DIY and paid $220 for OEM battery at dealership, install and my friend register battery for free.

Go to a battery shop who deals with a million different cars. They will be able to take care of you. Don't pay the freight at the dealer. However they did give me an oil service with the new BMW value service plan. $79. That's a fair price for the job. Cheaper than an INDY.
