Newbie needing some help....

Hi Everyone,

Im relatively new to the site, been reading for a while before I registered but glad I joined up....Im a huge fan of the E39 ever since I had a 1996 520i SE. I have recently purchased a 2001 530d, but only problem is that its an auto.....loved the look of the car so figured I could cope with the automatic but it is SOOOO slow. Getting above 60mph is hard and acceleration is poor, especially going up a hill or an incline. Was told before I got the car the EGR valve had gone so the owner had bought a blanking plate or bypass plate or something and that helped but not a great deal. I would love to get the car back to how it was when it rolled out the factory and get the mpg and most importantly the acceleration back up to where it was. The gear change seems weird to me aswell but that could be the auto box, if i leave it in P, and accelerate it seems to rev fine and it seems to take off a little better in 2 of the triptronic than 1 or in D. It starts fine so dont think its the MAF sensor, someone else mentioned a crankshaft position sensor, others mention vacuum hoses.....does anyone here have any idea what it could be? I could post a video on youtube or something of the speedo if it will help any? Any help would be greatly appreciated,

Thanks,
Stuttz

Have you read the P-codes?

We can't help, since the diesels never made it here.

There are quite a few issues you could have. Pull the codes. You could have fuel pressure issues and/or injector issues, vacuum leak, MAF.. You could unplug the MAF to see if makes any difference.

Thanks for the replies!! How do I go about pulling the codes? Do I need to go to a dealer to get them? I know it didn't pull anything on a mates diagnostic machine....

What diagnostic machine was used? You could get yourself INPA and pull the codes yourself. It was BMW factory diagnostic tool.

I think it was just an OBD2 Snap On thing, my friend does a lot himself on cars and it was his tool but I want to get more involved and fix it myself!! Looking at the complexity of diesels I should sell it and buy a 540i haha
