After my M3 had a very unfortunate encounter with a sink hole that was masquerading as a pothole this past week, PassportBMW provided me with a nicely equipped 535ix loaner. "Mommy's" car is not the most apt description - more appropriate, might be "luxury" car. I definitely would not categorize my 535 as a "sports" sedan. The driving experience of this F10 brings these words to mind - heavy - large - lazy - relaxed - comfortable - inoffensive - bland - soft.....I am genuinely taken aback by the lack of "BMWness". Perhaps if the car was equipped with M Sport and Dynamic handling the milquetoast quality of this 535 might be mitigated. I should note my X3 35i M Sport is a far more engaging driving experience. I recognize that BMW is a big tent, to each his own....

Granted, these fellas were a bit younger than me, but is this typically how the 20s-30s crowd think about the 5 series now?

I've actually been asked by guys while parked, and even at stop lights, what kind of BMW is that, commenting that it looks so cool. I guess that is one of the questions you get when you have no badges...

Nevertheless, a guy would not ask about it if he thought it looked like a mommy car.

I love the Woodlands. Especially after going down to Missouri City and out to Katy. Not so pretty.

No, we never got anywhere with the meetup. We should soon before I am BMWless.

I am hoping to make mine a mommy car as I am jonesing for another 911. That being said I don't feel that my car fits the prototypical mold of mommy car by any stretch of the imagination. I would gladly line my 500 hp mommy mobile along side their impending choice and see if they can show me their logic at a drag strip.

Talking

Whew... I was afraid to mention that the F10 was threating my masculinity and that's the real reason we had to part ways.

Now some comments for comparison:

When I got my SL550 back in 2007, I had a female employee tell me that I wasted my money, because it didn't look any better than a Chrysler Sebring Convertible.

At the other extreme (same car), I had a pick-up driver walk up to me a say "I bet the insurance payments on that thing costs more than my whole truck. That's a beautiful car."

So, the public has their own varied opinions, just as we each have our own, so enjoy your cars and don't worry about what anyone else thinks, especially Capo - after all he drove an F07 and loved it.

Just kidding Capo.

Phew, my ego lives on another day!

Pulled up to a gas station today and a young guy in an Import genuinely & excitedly says "WOW man that's gorgeous car" while I'm pumping gas (and proceeds to throw other nice adjectives toward it).

And here I was getting paranoid that my Mommy car was growing me boobs!

What happens tomorrow though?!

I really like Houston, I had never spent much time there until recently I've made a number of trips there over the last 18 months. Thinking about relocating to Katy Tx for the wife's job. We would live/work in Katy although I might commute into Houston depending on what I find employment wise. I think I would miss the open spaces of NM where you can (mostly) drive at or above the posted speed limit your whole commute even during "rush hour". But the Houston area seems to offer a lot in terms of life style & quality of life.

As for a Mommy's car I think the 5 is far from it unless its the SUV version. And here in NM a Pickup truck with 4 doors is definitely a Mommys Car if no other reason practicality on the ranch & in town.

Get the car YOU want, not the car your friend want (or wish they had). If they think another car is "the shizzle", let THEM spend the money for it.

I am EXTREMELY happy with my 550. It provides me with exactly what I was looking for in a car at this point in my life. To the owner of the M3, to each their own. I am sure you love it, but while I considered one 10 years ago I would probably not get one now. My wife owns an E90 (sport package etc), and while it's a nice car, for SHORT trips, anything over a few hundred miles in a single sitting and you will wish you were in something...ANYTHING...else. The suspension becomes jarring, not firm, and the seats become rock hard, not supportive. I don't get that with my F10 550. It's a car I can easily make the Delaware to Chicago run in, with just a few fuel stops and a burger...usually gotten in Ohio. (14 hour drive with dogs...13 without). Take a trip over some rural Michigan roads and you will see the down side of a sport tuned suspension (the one and ONLY time we took the E90 instead of a truck/ute...looking forward to the F10 being the primary for those trips)

As for "mommy" cars, I've heard things like that said about a lot of cars....
"The Miata (MX-5) is a girl's car", "A Sport Ute is a girl's car", A minivan is a mom's car" - funny thing about the last one...both my father and brother prefer to drive the family minivan and have "stolen" it from their wives...it became "their" car, even though they had others they could drive...something about being able to see over everyone else and having tons of cargo space for the run to the hardware store...or maybe just being able to put the kids in different rows to stop the fights...

No car is going to fit all of us. Some of us here for instance will swear by the 550, or a Dinan 550, or the M5, or the 535, and even the 528, telling the others "you waste too much gas", "you don't need that much power", "I love the power of the 550 (or M5 depending) and would not live without it" etc. To each their own and I say, good for them getting the car that best suits them. Heck, if someone here suddenly decided that the Camry was "their car" for this time in their lives, more power to them...I might question their touch with reality though (J/K).

Don't worry about your "friends". It's your own heart and head you should be following, not theirs. After all, it's your life...don't let someone else live it for you.

Mommy's don't want sedans. They want SUVs. All the moms I know (including my wife) drives a SUV or mini-van. Seems the model of choice is Acura MDX. As far as BMW, I would say the X5 is a car for the mommy.

Don't know a single women that drives a 5er. A bunch of women I know drive a 3er because they want something sporty but still have 4 doors.

Where I live, the Odyssey is by far the mom vehicle of choice, followed by the Yukon and Escalade.

Starting to see GL's on the road, which is what my wife wants next (she currently drives the Odyssey).

Funny you would suggest this in this "Mommy's car look" thread - while neither the F10 nor Camaro fits such "image", the SS does imho

But the Camaro? Well, perhaps this is a Fraudian thing, but I guess I'd feel right in it. I wouldn't like to hijack this interesting thread, so I'll just add my question was not about the looks but reliability, performance, real life economy and such. Very few of them in Poland, so I'm seeking opinions here in the US forum.

That's true. SUVs have become the quintessential Soccer Mom/female car, which is funny as the original intent of SUVs was to be anything but.

Perhaps it's a generational thing, or maybe perception of the 5 has changed over time, but when I was 20 I really admired the 5 as a luxury sports sedan, not something for old men or moms.

Let people think that. We wouldnt want too many F10s on the road. With a flooded market of F10s they wouldnt be as unique and rare

Funny, I have had my car about 7 weeks and I have seen about 5 other F10s on the road. 3 white 535s driven by middle-aged women, 1 black 528 driven by a young blonde chick, and 1 mojave 528 (driven by TX, a male forum member). So TX is actually the only other guy I have seen in a F10 . They are not all that common here in south Houston.

Even in California, supposedly the stronghold of BMWs, white F30s outnumber white F10s by a huge number. Of course, it has become rather difficult to distinguish between F30 and F10 anyway.

Back to original topic: I have seen a few middle-aged ladies in a 6er, but never in a 5er. I think X5/MDX/RX/Cayenne are the quintessential "mommy-mobile" - I have seen very few men driving them in the Bay Area.

let me take that back. I discourage everyone from purchasing a F10 550 M Sport... The market is not flooded with these... I'd bet that most women wouldnt buy one..Most dont care about power and speed

Jeez! Old men = mommies?

None of my CA's have told me I am past the expiration date for allowing me to drive 5-series sedans. Looks like I will need to go directly to an X5 or X3 if a Prius doesn't entice me first.
