violent slamming from down/back somewhere

1987 325i manual *WBAAD1300H88315466*
Pseudo mechanic suspects vacuum leak, feels a lot more like a mechanical (hardware) problem as the car lurches and a distinct violent slamming back and forth happens, it does remind me of trailing arm bushing failure in my Volvo 240 wagon. like interruption of fuel, coupled with sledgehammer hits back and forth to drive shaft.. intermittent though. Any help much appreciated. Horribly unsteady idle at times too, but they both come and go.. thanks for help! -

87 325i man. trans. please help.

I have been concerned about these impacts, wrecking something else on the car, and I found myself with 3 missing fasteners, one of which was sheared off and found under my parking spot, (another the evidence was not recovered but sounded and felt like catastrophic failure and i could not drive afterwards. must have been the last of the three.) Turns out the drive shaft attachment bolts through the guibo were missing. Could this have happened due to the force of this intermittent slamming?! I obviously don't want this to happen again after purchasing and reinstalling new guibo, correct bolts, locking nuts, center support bearing, and Transmission mounts which were damaged as well.. thanks for any experience, help. -Jb

Are you saying the "slamming" is from an intermittent engine miss, or the engine is stuttering because of some strange disconnect with the drive train?

The way you describe it, I think the ignition is cutting out momentarily as you drive, but it's awfully hard to tell without experiencing first hand what's going on.

Like HH wrote, we need more to go on.

My 325i was making strange noises from "down back". It was a bad rear u-joint on the driveshaft (unserviceable - I replaced the DS).

You really should check and make sure someone is not stuck in your trunk...

real funny. my car has been down for a long while waiting for parts from mainland and expensive. This is my transportation I don't have money to burn. Will it happen again after I replace what I know is bad!?! It is a vivid description, it's not from the trunk. more down below than back and makes the whole car lurch forward and a violent slamming bang. Is putting my vibration dampener (the metal cylinder the guibo mounts up inside of) back in a mistake, can I leave it out of the equation? It is starting to show wear, but not loose yet, (and I can't afford another $350 part that I don't even know is a problem) Anyone have a like new one to sell for a decent price?

drove about 6k on it before i traded it. its not too important as long as you get a water resistant one in, since the rear is independent the diff mainly sits still so the driveshaft doesnt move in and out much if any

The pseudo mechanic pulled the drive line out, so unfortunately I didn't see how it came off. (I think that's how the transmission centering sleeve on the end of the drive shaft was broken.) I can't find a schematic anywhere in either of my manuals of how the trans. output flange and the guibo flex mount attatch and especially where my three washers go when I see 15 places they could (5 options) under lock nuts or under bolt heads, second variable: against drive shaft flange, or trans. output flange 3rd and 4th, one or the other side against the guibo? since I have a vib. damp. there are 2 sides of that they could go on too! does driveshaft flange bolt through guibo and three flange holes of the damper and the trans output flange bolt through guibo only, or do bolts go through trans flange and vib. damper and the shaft flange just through guibo?! WHY DID I NOT SEE THIS dilemna BEFORE?! thanks, joshua

You need this:

http://www.pelicanparts.com/bmw/tech.../E36-Guibo.htm

Say E36, but it covers the E30, too.

1987 325i manual trans. Has anyone been able to replace u joints on their drive line? I am being told that I need to order a new drive line because of the crimped fitting type of u joint retainers on my drive line. both u joints are bad, the one at the diff. was frozen in one axis, and had play in both too. Could that have been the source of this problem all along!? anyone deal with u joint replacement? have drive line for sale with good u joints? or know of an aftermarket one available with serviceable parts? thanks, -joshua

you can replace them but its a PITA and not recommended by most. easiest way is the junkyard and finding one.

2 Bad ujoints I hope this stops the slamming lurching safety issue or I just wasted$

I found a shop that will sell for 6hundred something an aftermarket driveline complete, (and serviceable), with more stock sized u-joints. total will be prob about $800.
Another will core mine and get a rebuilt staked in one like oem for 5hundred something shipped. Pelican has new before tax and shipping $963! complete line with center support bearing. Amen to the quote : no such thing as a cheap bimmer. -jb HI

Google "BMW driveshaft rebuilders". There are tons of places that rebuild them for a LOT less than that. Even with shipping you'll be better off sending to one of them. That's crazy expensive.

Egads, I completely forgot you were in the middle of the Pacific.

I don't imagine there is an abundance of BMW wrecking yards over there?
