Pressure checking 04 X3 coolant system

Recently the yellow check coolant light has been coming on and off. I toped it off many times now leading me to think I have a leak somewhere. Im going to rent one of those tools this weekend to see what is going on and to also confirm it has a leak.

Are there thing common that I should for while I do it? Also what parts should I remove so I can see the coolant system better.

Easiest way to check for a leak - drive it a while to get the engine warm, then park on somewhere you can lay down a plastic sheet (I like the big white ones from the dollar store). If you see coolant, not only do you have a leak, but you'll have an idea where it's coming from.

However, you'll need to remove the bottom protector plastic plate first, so leaks don't just pool up on that. You can remove it and drive around safely, although don't forget to put it back, since it does help protect the engine from flying rocks and whatnot. It's possible, although a little annoying, to remove that plastic cover while the car isn't propped up at all.

There are several DIY posts here for taking the cooling system apart. If you just want to look around, you can take off the air ducts, air filter housing, and radiator fan pretty quickly and you'll be able to see everything without actually having to drain out the entire system.
