Installation of the roof rails does not involve removing the headliner. The connections are all accessed from the exterior. I am going to order black roof rails for $650 - 20% = $520 plus shipping. I will attempt to install them myself. Otherwise I will have a superb body shop do it. Hopefully I can sell my silver roof rails. I'll post photos.

Are you 100% sure about that, Pharding? My service department was very clear that they would have to drop the headliner to swap out the rails. They said all of the nuts (3 per rail) are accessed from inside the car, under the headliner. They further stated they have installed them on several X3's that didn't come with them from the factory, so they seemed to know the installation procedure. I'll be curious to know if they were wrong. If so, it makes we question taking my car there for service!

I have read multiple posts by others that have gone through this in the past say they have to take out the headliner as well. I think Pharding has it wrong.

I went out and looked at my X3. I don't see any way to access exterior connections. I must be wrong unfortunately.

Good to know, Pharding. I was hoping my information was incorrect, for your sake. Please let us know how the installation goes, in any case.

Ouch! (Pesky schedule of finishes, hmmm?)

Now, Carbon black is a deep, deep midnight blue, and paired with my Oyster interior

In fact, the '14 X3 I ordered a few weeks ago, which was supposed to come with the High Gloss Black rails, arrived at the dealership yesterday with the Satin Aluminum rails and they look so terrible, I told my CA they will have to reorder my vehicle. He is offering to have them swapped for the black rails, but I don't want major roof surgery on my brand new vehicle. Short of selling me this vehicle at $1k under invoice, they will be stuck with this X3 and will have to order me a new one. I can wait another 3 weeks.
Same thing happened to me this past December. Dealer got stuck with an extra X3 due to a mistake by the CA. I feel the the High Gloss Roof Rails go much better with a Deep Sea Blue M Sport because the trim around the side windows are black. They stand out too much in Satin Aluminum in my opinion. Roof rails should be more hidden.

I've got the satin rails on my Vermillion Red and feel they accent the body. I suggest ordering the cross members from your local BMW parts department. I did and thus far they are the least expensive accessory I've added. I've owned Thule racks for all my cars and I swear the BMW branded racks are from Thule. I priced the native Thule racks and they were almost $400 locally vs $160 I paid at the dealer.

Exactly, Bmwlvr60! You are the third person I've heard of who has had this issue. Apparently, the Satin Aluminum rails are the default when M Sport is selected, according to my CA. Since they rarely order M Sport equipped vehicles at my dealership, they were unaware of this choice and simply missed it. They didn't miss it on my second order, though. This time, they had me double-check the order before they placed it with BMW.

I would add that I like the Satin Aluminum rails much more on non-M Sport vehicles. This is because on M Sport vehicles, the window trim is Shadowline (black), while on the non-M Sport vehicles the window trim is bright and shiny and better matches the Satin Aluminum rails. That combo blends together much better, to my eye. On an M Sport vehicle - especially a BSM M Sport, like mine - the Satin Aluminum is just too much of a contrast to the otherwise all-black vehicle and just pops out too much. That combo doesn't blend well together and makes the roof rails look like a tacked on afterthought, or something. Again, this is all my own opinion and everyone's tastes are different.

...My thoughts exactly. My X3 is black with Shadowline (black) Trim.

Red_X3, that's really a good price for the BMW crossbars. The catalog lists them for $275 and yes I think they are made by Thule. I'm paying more but the crossbars are Aeroblades, thinner and supposedly more wind-resistant, and they will be black powder-coated. Will post a pic when they are on the car.

I have a deep sea blue M Sport and I ordered aluminium rails with that as I thought it looked far better than the satin black roof rails as I think they look hideous as well

I also got the aluminium trim around the roof rails and seeing I got the 3.0d I also got the silver grill.

As you say - all down to personal taste!

Since I did not get the M-Sport package I do not have this conundrum

But it is interesting to watch the debate

Didnt the aluminium trim around the windows use to be part of the X-line package? So now we can order the trim around the windows in both black and Aluminium?

The x line pkg is still there. However if you get m sport pkg, there are two alternate options. One for roof rails - default is black. Alternate is satin aluminum. Second is for shadow line trim - default is black. Alternate is satin aluminum.

I do not see the X-line package on the BMW website, is it a port installed option?

For 2014, They eliminated the Sport Activity Package... Which got me real mad. Since my wife insisted on Bronze we couldnt get the M package. The Sport activity package included the X-Line Trim, and the Satin Rails, as well as the other nice features.

For 2014, the X-Line and Satin Rails are two separate options.

I have the satin aluminum rails with titanium silver exterior and I think it looks good. I don't mind the satin Al rails with black/carbon black, but I'd definitely expect my newly ordered/delivered X3 not to require any dealer work. Even if rails are replaced well, they might scratch the paint or something else. That's what happened to me, right above the driver door handle. Don't give service the chance to do damage!

Pictures are from the dealer when it first arrived - it was a bit dirty and still had the delivery wax on it which is why it looks nice and shiny in the last picture.

I also added a picture of my previous 330d SE which is where I got teh idea from!

Same color combination I got and I think it looks stellar.
