Advice from Experienced Owners 328i 08

Hi all - I've been lurking these forums for quite some time as it seems I may have landed quite a deal from a family member.

Long story short: Relative leaving - needs to dump off her 2008 328i and I offered her something that I can afford with some more piece of mind knowing that it is used and has 72k miles on it.

She doesn't smoke, no accidents, doesn't drive her car hard, has all of her records on the car - has had no issues and is the 2nd owner.

I'm able to snatch it for 13k.

Is there anything I should know before buying? Anything I should look into replacing in the near future? Etc.

Any advice would be grand - thanks!

It's a used car so anything can fail. Based on my 2004 330Ci I would expect the O2 sensors to be on the short list. Think mine went out at about 80K. Not a hard DIY there are 4 of them & about $400 for the parts. Valve cover may fail by 90K under $100 for parts & around 110K look for water pump issues. The car had factory service for the 4X50 & I have done all the work since. Car is at 120 & the water pump is still OK but others have had issues them. Brakes are an open ended item based on how it was driven.

I have about $1100 not counting tires (on its third set) out of pocket in the car since new. Car is going on Tuesday to make room for the 135is.

Um $13k? Is it super clean? Lot of options? Seems a little over market value at $13k. I pluggeed some figures into Edmunds for an AT RWD 328i in average condition with 72k and got $12k private party for market value.

EDIT Well I take that back, saw several 08s on Carmax going for $18-20k, so I may very well be wrong and you got a sweet deal.

I'd get the VIN and see if it was affected by the battry recall. Our '07 E91 had a wierd occasional non-start which I now believe was this issue.

Good luck with the car.

The most important thing to know is: You better buy it before I do! What a price!

Mileage is of little concern - these are quality rides. 328i's reliable and if maint is needed, detailed DIY posts & YouTubes abound - recommend you Google away this morning.

Your key here is buying a known vehicle from a family member .... this is a solid model without unusual issues (not saying no issues ... its a BMW).

Whoa - thanks for all the replies guys. Yes - its super clean - no accidents, never seen snow, always garaged, she should have all the major records saved - I think they might have replaced water pump(?) but will have to double check.

Bit of back story:
I've been waiting for something like this for a while - oddly enough I had a preorder on a BR-Z but backed out due to it being brand new + tax out the door (even though I had it saved at MSRP) was 30k +.

Now although these two cars are VERY different - I really just wanted a fun car that was going to be a much more enjoyable ride than my civic but knew I would have to sacrifice:
- reliability
- insurance payments
- gas payments

The only scary thing for me w/ BMW's were reliability! I'm going to have to do a lot more reading so I know more about these cars and know how to take care of them...

If/when I do get it - will provide an update - thanks guys! It's strange how everyone is so nice here...

We just bought an 09 328ix a month ago. Fantastic car, and yours is a great value. Grab it and run! Any work you need to do will fall well within the value of the car.

It's not a sports car, it's a luxury car with sports capabilities - but it's a fantastic ride.

BMW engines and drivetrains are bulletproof through 200K miles and more. It's peripheral stuff that costs $$.

Awesome - thanks for the info. I was going to check things based off of: http://www.bavauto.com/Assets/inst_pages/e90mc.pdf

Have you guys seen that before? Is it pretty accurate?

So update is there is 1 other person who checked out her car who might be interested. Other than that - if that person backs out - she'll refer to me - and its now bumped up to 13.5k cause thats what she said carmax was offering her (and from my understanding - would still be a good deal on my end - esp. knowing that most dealerships will jip you from your car?) I'm just afraid of the things I might need to replace. She has all her records - but I'm not sure what work they have already done. Also need to get that VIN # so I can get an insurance quote...

So I'll know by this weekend!

According to that article I had (http://www.bavauto.com/Assets/inst_pages/e90mc.pdf) it seems that the wear and tear on those items is still an estimate? Since it seems your o2 sensors were out at around 80k and the article recommends them being replaced at around 100k.

Does anyone have knowledge/experience w/ the article?

I have an 07, no major issues. One no start that was a relay. Noisy lifters replaced under warranty. Eccentric shaft seal. Belt tensioner.
65k miles.
Mine is a manual with sport pack no Idrive. BRZ is the ONLY car I would currently consider trading for.

am planning koni's/sways next. That'll keep me happy for awhile

My advice never buy anything from family members. Seen too many things happen and of course, bad blood from the deal.

I wanted that BR-Z / FR-S so bad - but it's so new and full price just doesn't make financial sense to me at this moment.

Anyways - the deal is actually green lit now. Moment I tell her yes - we can take care of everything at the DMV this coming Saturday.

Now to do some more insurance shopping....the quote AAA gave me is kinda high =T

@Hongsc - I hear ya - and I totally agree with you - if it weren't for the fact that their family is completely loaded and just needs to get rid of this I wouldn't be so willing to jump on it. Trust me - I was incredibly skeptical at first - but understanding the situation - I think it should be good.

Thanks for the help everyone - it looks like I'm going to jump on this

State Farm is cheaper. AAA was expensive for me as well. I think they quoted me $200. State Farm was about $150 with renter's insurance, towing etc.

At that price, even if it gives you trouble it's still a good deal.

Thanks for all the help guys - looks like the deal is going through this saturday!

I'll post pics as soon as I have some - but I did get to test drive it this past saturday and what a difference it is compared to my civic....

That being said - should I take the car in to a shop just to make sure nothing seems to be on the verge of breaking? I'm worried about this specific aspect of the car - esp. considering its a bimmer....

Thats a great deal. Just remember anything to fix is 2x as much. Insurance will also be higher.

Thanks! - yeah I've already gotten my insurance quote and I knew that was going to be more (I dunno whats going to be less than my civic that's "Fun to drive" ).

Repairs/Maint I know is going to be costly - but I want to do everything in my power to avoid them and jump on things before they turn into something bigger
