Should I drive or ship my beamer?

Hey everyone,
always a reader never a poster. I'm moving 800 miles and was wondering if I should drive my 2009 328i or if i should ship it which will cost like 600 bucks. If anyone has shipped their car before and had a good experience can they recommend a company in california? Thanks.

Drive, its just one long day. Used to drive Raleigh to Philly for my wifes medical treatment then turn around & drive home. About 840 miles round trip.

If you're shipping your furniture and stuff, then drive. Unless you need to drive a moving truck, why wouldn't you drive your car?

800 miles on a beamer might change my thought (beamer / beemer is a motorcycle)

How many miles on your Bimmer? is it a garage queen or a museum piece?

800 miles is nothing to be concerned about. We often take our E93 on lengthy trips -- e.g., Denver to: Sedona, AZ; Santa Fe, NM; Black Hills, SD; Moab, UT; Jackson Hole, WY; etc.

If you're moving east from Cali, make sure to have a tire repair kit onboard. You'll encounter miles upon miles of empty road once you get into flyover country.

about 90k miles laser. Also and i apologize if this is not the right forum, but is there any truth to bmws having all kind of mechanical problems after 100k? It's folklore that I have heard time and time again.

lol ... the 09 328i is one of the most dependable and trouble free BMWs ever ... we plan on keeping ours for a long time (52,000 miles now). No magic trip wire at 100,000.

Our 2002 330i we gave to our daughter is past 120,000 miles with normal maintenance.

Just find a good independent BMW shop where you move and let them take care of your baby.

800 miles is one long day or two really, really easy days. Drive and enjoy the scenery. It's a big country and it's interesting to look around.

We visit family 1100 miles away fairly often. We just take two days to drive it each way and enjoy stopping at odd roadside attractions and parks. Stop - look around - see the giant Jackalope. It's all fun.

Those are the "easiest" and best kind of miles you can put on the car-highway. And in the grand scale of things when you go to sell down to road, 800 miles on the ODO is basically insignificant against the total miles. Drive it man and enjoy the open road!!

800 miles on my last Beemer ('06 R1200) was no problem whatsoever, especially at 50 mpg - unless one encountered snow & ice. 800 miles on a Bimmer means it's not even breathing hard.

Regarding issues our 2004 330Ci is being replaced by the 135is late next week. No major issues since new. About $1100 out of pocket in 120K miles.

Some of you guys carry on like a BMW is the only car made that is capable of going on an 800 mile trip. I can't think of any modern car that could not easily handle an 800 mile trip. Many of them may not be as comfortable or enjoyable to drive as a BMW but they will all get you where you want to go.

Now Captain I'm reminded of driving my 1966 MGB from Atlanta to Key West ..... 848 miles with the top down ...... felt like I'd been beaten about the head and shoulders with a baseball bat .... don't remember if the radio ever worked in that car ..... but I was deafened by the buffeting anyway.

Tom K. would probably have been more comfortable on his R1200

Long highway trips wear your tyres, and maybe suspension and or brakes depending on road quality and traffic respectively. Any well cooled moderately sized engine will laugh at a long constant load run just check fluids/tyres before you set off. Booting it within 15 min of turning the key is what does most of the damage.

And minor point you're not saving 600 bucks, you're saving 600 bucks less the cost of two? tanks of gas.

Out of California?! Wow!, depending where you are and where you are going, there are some awesome roads to explore during your trip...if you are creative , you could turn the 800 into 1200 easy!

My daughter's 1991 Camaro convertible with 150K miles on it just drove from Oklahoma to Denver, nearly 800 miles - in one day.

I wouldn't hesitate to do it in my 1983 280ZX Turbo with 126K miles on it. In fact, I have done it more than once.

Highway miles are easy miles....it's the best driving for the car.
