2002 525i Defect Codes

Can someone tell me what these defect codes mean:

1711075900

85990089MP

6400011100

The VIN number is WBADT434X2GY96202

I am thinking of buying this car, CPO, $33000. How does the price sound for a CPO with 20100 miles on it. I have mixed feelings.

Looked up the history from the dealer, and got these repair codes. I have to tell the dealer by tomorrow whether I am interested.

Thanks, for any help.

I don't know anything about pricing, but I can tell you:

1711075900 Radiator coolant too low.
85990089MP Oil service under Maintenance Program.
6400011100 Heating operation, occasional failure.

That's it? I'd be very careful to check all interior trim items. Radio, CD, handles, headliner, door panels, seats, center console trim, wood trim, etc. Most people find a few more things to have checked or repaired when the car is still under the full 4year/50K mile bumper to bumper warranty. I'd be concerned about noises, rattles, broken pieces, etc. if the previous owner didn't ever have one thing like that checked. CPO does not cover wear or trim items, so you would have to get all that done before the regular warranty expires. Just some food for thought.

When did it go into service? They should have done the oil a couple times by now. (You get it every 12 mo even if the oil lights are not expired. Previous owner didn't have it done more often?)

M. Wong: are these defect codes written somewhere?

Van Rags: altough the mileage isn't high - check the waterpump (Radiator coolant too low - 1711075900). That's a common problem with E39. If the pump is leaking coolant it must be replaced. You can see white stains in certain engine parts if leaking.

Check also: PDC functionality (check all sensors), buttons at air condition module (also a common problem - they break easily), car alarm.

Good luck.

You need a KSD to decipher the defect codes. (Kustomer Service Disk.) There are so many codes, I don't think anyone has any desire to put them all on a list on the web anywhere.

The codes start with the parts group to which they refer, so you can at least know what kind of entry it is if you know which parts start with the same two digits.

If you know that the radiator part number starts with 17, the defect code that starts with 17 is cooling system related.

You can PM me if you have defect codes to decipher. Or you can post them... there are several people who will check them for ya!

Examine the cupholder, VanRags! See if it is broken!

Thanks for all your help !!!.

The defect codes and all other advice is great !.

The car went in to service 8/2002, so I guess I will have to get an oil change done as soon as I get it !.

I will be sure to check all the componenets, trim etc tomorrow before I make the buy.

I will keep everyone informed about my purchase

Thanks again for the wonderful help !!!!!!!!

Looks like the owner moved to atlanta. CarFax has no record of it after the Seatle sale. No registration in GA. Anything fishy ?.

Have you seen the car yet? I bet the service records would show a Puget Sound dealership did the work. I am guessing the car has not been in GA that long. Ask your sales person how they got the car. Hopefully it's a trade-in (as opposed to an auction pick up) and they can give you some timeframe of how long it's been in GA.

No reason to be suspicious, yet.

M.Wong,

I have noticed Carfax shows a Auto Auction regirstration if the car is picked up from an auction. This could be a trade-in. CarFax says it wa registerd in Redmond, WA on 8/1/2002 as a PErsonal Veh. then on 8/27/2004 Title issued as a lease vehicle.

One dealer told me, if a vehicle from out of state is turned in as a lease, BMW makes the dealer return it to a BMW Auction (in Florida, not sure if there are multiple). So many cars show that the car is bought off a auction.

Thanks,
Raghav
