We have a 2011 35i and we both love it. My wife drives most local trips while I do most of the long distance driving. We're both pretty easy on the gas pedal and average 24-25 mpg (at 6000-7000 ft elevation) overall.

I love the smooth effortless power provided by the N55 engine and, as an engineer, I appreciate its efficiency and refinement. Probably the best engine BMW builds. I'm surprised by all of the 28i sales when such a fabulous engine is available.

It's my wife's primary vehicle and I primarily drive an Acura RL. I think the 28i has plenty of power and if it had more I'd get speeding tickets. I like the fact it gets better gas mileage and costs at least $3K less up front. If you're an enthusiast go for the bigger engine, you're wife will doubtfully see a difference. Just got back from a long drive over the weekend and we were getting 25+ mpg. At times the on board computer was registering 30+ mpg. Bottom line is we're filling up the tank about half the time over our old Acura MDX. Insurance rates are less with smaller engine.

I think it's always a good idea to do a back to back comparison test drive of new model vehicles.

Let us know how it goes

I'm a bit late to this thread but wanted to add that my wife loves her 28i. Although it's a 2012, so it has the naturally aspirated I6. I'm actually very happy about that. Not sure how I'd like an I4 in an SUV, even if it is a turbo.

We've never had problems with a lack of power. We understand that we're driving an SUV. It's the best handling SUV on the market, and the 28i has enough power to keep most people happy.

But I did test drive a 35i, and it's a totally different car. Just a beast basically, no doubt the best driving SUV out there.

Also, not sure if anybody else already suggested it, but you should consider custom ordering it. If you can wait a bit (a couple months), it's definitely the way to go.

I have the 35 with Sport and DHP packages - pretty much same as M, but without the cosmetic stuff such as bumpers and wheel-arch mouldings. Sport package steering wheel is slightly bigger than the on in M, but i believe seats are the same.

Basically im tossed between the 28 and 35, Since it wont be my daily driver, I may just go with the 28, and when I drive, throw it in sport mode. When I test drove the 28 in sport it wasnt too bad, not really what I was looking for but its about a 5K savings.

Just 6% more in MSRP to upgarde to the best driving SUV in class, sounds like the 35i is a no brainer

As an update, we decided to order the 35i. The responses in this thread cemented my gut to go with the 6 cylinder.

We opted for 3.5 and glad we did and the M Sport Package is really nice.

I guess it depends on the dealership. We got our new X3 from the dealer's inventory. It had just arrived that morning and still had all the plastic wrapping covering the seats. It had all the packages and options I would have ordered and was the exact color and leather interior. The other X3's in the showroom and on the lot were pretty "loaded" feature-wise.

Congrats Durkis! How wonderful.
