Strange noise from engine after car turned off..

Hey everyone,

Long time reader, first time posting. I bought a 2010 328i about a week ago, and I've been noticing a strange sound coming from the engine area when the car is off. It's kind of an electronic whirring noise, pretty soft, happens every 15-20 seconds or so.

Anyone have any ideas what this sound is, and what it's coming from?

My previous car was a 2000 328ci, and it didn't do anything like what I'm hearing on this one.

Thanks!

Do you hear it outside the car or from the inside? Also, do you have iDrive?

The water pump keeps running to continue to cool down the engine after you turn it off if above a certain temp. This helps extend engine life. If you think about a car with a regular water pump driven by the engine and belts, when you turn the car off hot, it stops the cooling process and coolant flow. That is an advantage of the electric pump vs. mechanical. Also, there is less load put on the engine when running and the pump can flow coolant faster if needed when the engine rpm is slower. On the flip side, they are more expensive as a part but may save you big bucks in the long run on head gasket jobs. A lot of newer front wheel drive cars have the water pump built into the engine block which requires a timing chain cover removal to replace...$$$$!

Isn't it the HFHP de-pressurizing?

No. For starters, the 328 has no HPFP.

It applies to engines that use direct injection rather than port injection. The turbocharger is irrelevant, though offhand I cannot recall a non-turbocharged direct-injected BMW engine. (I know they exist so I'm sure someone will chime in.)

(Edit: The N53 is DI, non-turbo.)

My 2006 325i makes a sound like a decelerating turbine after shut down. Kind of like a little jet engine spooling down.

It only happens once and then stops, but it is winter here in Indiana so maybe it would happen more than once if it was hotter.

Is this what you are describing craming9?

I like the sound. It sounds like the Batmobile after the "Dynamic Duo" park it in the Bat Cave (in the TV series).

Is this the electric water pump or something else?
