Latest time to order E70?

Since the F15 is scheduled to begin production in August, has a BMW announced when it will stop taking orders for the E70? I'm considering moving from my 5-series into an X5 and I'm not sure about the 2014 model . . . just wondering how long I have to make up my mind!

Not yet. In fact, BMW has to make a certain number of E70's each year and if they haven't yet sold enough of them come August, you may well be able to find new ones late in the year.

If they are going to start product of the F15 in August, I suspect they will stop production of the E70 at least a month beforehand to provide changeover and debugging time for producting the new model.

My guess would be that they stop production of the E70 at the end of June.

That would be my guess as well. I purchased/ordered in Feb - my thinking was that I wanted what will likely be among the most reliable E70s as they have been building them since 07 and tweaking/improving since. There wont be a better E70 with regard to features/options. I didn't want to be too close the the changeover, because my guess is that there will be a lot of distraction on the assembly line down the home stretch as they re-tool for the F15.

I love the E70's look and true-to-BMW driving feel - always have and didn't want to chance that the look/feel get diluted with the F15. Additionally, first model year with BMW, you are a beta tester. You get to find their mistakes and help them fix it.

I ordered my E70 on Feb 23 and took delivery 18 days later. No issues off the lot that didn't have to do with the dealer's crap installation of my trailer hitch. A story for another thread.

I don't know how accurate this is, but when I was looking at X5s, one of the dealerships in my area that I went to said that May was the last time they could order an E70 X5. I didn't end up buying through that dealership, because I didn't appreciate the unwarranted attitude from the salesmen. Nonetheless, the sales manager there stressed May would be the end, right before he snidely said they had a long wait list, and it would be pointless to try.

Is Canada always a few months late after US in releasing the new model?

If BMW starts production in August (from the US orders) does that mean we will finally find out what the new body style will look like (100%, no spyshots or other possible fakes) much sooner before then? Like May/June??

Do you guys think there will be an overlap between when the full official body style imagery is released AND dealers/factory still taking E70 production orders? (hence I wonder if the Canadian delay might aid in lengthening that transition period a bit).

Keep in mind that the F15 diesel will not show up until late this year or early 2014. I would guesstimate that BMW will continue E70 diesel production until late 2013.

While possible, I doubt that they will set-up the production line to assemble E70s and F15s concurrently, and switching the line back and forth to just make a few diesel models would be prohibitively costly, based on my prior inexperience working at one of the major auto companies. The welding robots particularly tend to be an issue.

Not going to happen. When they change the line over to F15's, there will be no more E70's built, ever. The E70 has been selling so well lately, you may be hard pressed to find dealers with configurable production slots (don't know this for a fact, but it's an informed guess). If you wait till May, you may be SOL, at least in your local area.

My advice: contact your local dealers NOW (i.e. before the endo fo March) to see what they have available. You are always in the best negotiating position the last few days of the month. Also reach out to Board sponsors like Adrian, Jon Shafer, Greg Poland, etc. and find out what they could do for Performance Center Delivery. I am thinking that Knoxville can't be all that far from Spartanburg, so PCD is an option you definitely want to explore.

I wouldn't be so sure. If what you say is true, there would be no diesels built July - November, as the F15 diesel SOP is in December IIRC. It could happen of course, but I am skeptical. We'll see in a few months...

OTOH, it is virtually unthinkable that they would continue to build E70's once line production is switched to the F15. Very little is impossible, but doing that is pretty close, when it comes to operating auto assembly plants.

I expect the dealers have already been informed of "last order" timing, or will be in the very near future, as I believe their order slots go out 90 days or thereabouts. So asking a couple of dealers is probably the way to find out for sure.

Where is the common sense here? Do you really think selling diesel is so important that BMW would have their suppliers make parts for BOTH the E70 and the F15 simultaneously? Fenders, roofs, glass, electronics, exhaust systems, carpets, running boards, roof rails, fasteners and everything else? Double their warehouse space and logistics expense to have both parts available at the factory? Program all the robots and train all the employees to switch back and forth constantly? All to eke out a couple more months of diesel sales?

SRSLY?

It's my understanding that BMW will be producing diesel engine F15s from the get-go, it is just that they will be sold exclusively in Europe until the F15 diesel is released in the USA late this year. It would make no sense, whatsoever, to continue to produce an E70 single engine model for one market, as that would complicate the switchover to the new model, and increase production costs for both models. It would be highly unlikely BMW would recoup those increased costs over the few months it continued to produce the E70 diesel while ramping up production of the F15. It would make more sound business sense to lose the few diesel sales it would have made in the one market, with the hopes those buyers would hold-off the few months until the diesel appears. I believe BMW is introducing the models in each market first that it sees selling best upfront. Despite what many want, the US is a gasoline market, and Europe is more consistently diesel oriented.

+1. We did PCD for both of our X5's. If you can do it, that's the absolute best way to take delivery of your new BMW

My 1 pretty penny:

All mfgs tend to stray from the black and white every so often. BMW has done this a couple times when it comes to EOPs. What ends up happening is anyones call.

What we know so far:
1) The f15 guide has no option for the diesel.
2) The stated EOP for the D is 11/13
3) The stated EOP for the I is 7/13
4) Diesel tends to be the hardest to get thru EPA and CARB
5) BMW loves to do a massive build out of models they know are selling, and would be left without a successor for a while

Update: I have not received any responses from Jon, Greg, Justin, Adrian or any other site expert on the EOP for the E70 diesel. Appears to be a state secret punishable by death or something... So I am inclined to side with quack etc. that the end for E70 diesel is indeed in July.

I guess it is a testament to the E70 that people are still willing to pay big $$ for a new "old" SUV at the end of its lifecycle.
