Possible Transmission Swaps

Curious, I have a 1990 535i (e34 m30). I want to swap from Auto to Manual. I have been looking around and am wondering what my options are and which ones are best. So far from what I've gathered the Getrag 265/5 is the best one but im not sure if it even bolts up other than that ive heard the 260/5 and 280/5 would work. Please can someone get back with me and help me figure our exactly what transmission I should get in order to push 500hp+

wow u make it a oint to be a dick huh lol i notcie u do this in alot of threads.

dude asked a simple question man. OP i dont know the answer but search for a swap thread for youre engine there shuld be plenty think the e36 m3 trans will work since it bolts to the m62 but im nt sure. bmw trannies are very strong but 500 hp will make minced meat out of even the stoutest units.

the rear end is also going to take a beating. when you do find a compatibe trans make sure you get more than one. good luck man

You reckon?? I don't think so myself but hey, freedom of speech and all that.. Perhaps my comment was misinterpreted, or comments, due to the fact it's in writing!! I asked a simple question so I could get more details off him.. So I could perhaps offer my opinion from where his car is at now.. That is all!!

OP, no offence intended, godspeed to you and your project!!

OP, look for Getrag 6 out of a 3.8 M5, it bolts onto the m30 in your 535i, check this link;

http://www.bmwe34.net/E34main/Mainte...ssion_main.htm

I'm sure the box and diff from the M5 could easily handle 400bhp..

Well all of that is besides the fact I need a manual transmission for this e34 m30 does anyone know how to find one 265/5 or 260/5 or another manual that will bolt on and support 500+ hp

Neither of them will "support 500 hp" since those power levels were never even considered by the engineers that designed these cars. NONE of the driveline nor the brakes are up to that level of power, they never will be no matter what BMW trans you fit.

The 260 and 265 are bolt ins, anthying else starts getting custom. Watch the sale forums at Bfc, or give Bav Auto recylers a call, they likely have a used unit. Manuals were rather rare, not many 535/5 or M5 cars were sold in the US, you will not find used transmissions easily.

Truth right there that much power is gonna eat those parts for breakfast. That said I've had alot of luck finding rare parts on eBay and craigslist. I found a guy parting out an e30m3 on craigslist. It doesn't get rarer than that. You got to shop around.

Also re power wise it depends on what yo want to do with the car if its drag racing a couple friends of mine have had alot of success converting to a ford automatic. Those are designed for big HP applications. The rear end would be my biggest concern.

Running a ford trans will require a custom made adapter plate or bellhousing but there are companies that will make these for any car if you send them the original bell housing. You may have to make some chassis and drieshaft mods as well. But it might be worth looking into if you drag race. A friend of mine did this swap in his 300zx he was going through trannies like oil filters
