Trying to help a friend with his E46 M3

So his car wont start. It was sitting for about 3 weeks and he didn't unplug the battery. First replaced the battery with proper battery and it didn't start. Changed the starter since we got one for really cheap figured might as well.

When the key is turned I hear the fuel pump and it is making noises. Basically you turn the key and it just makes one clank sound and nothing else. No fast clicking like when the battery is dead etc. Any thoughts?.

It's a 2006 E46 M3 SMG.

If you haven't experienced an SMG, I think you have to hold it cranked for a couple seconds before it rolls over. Not like ours where you hear it clicking. Also, obviously make sure its in neutral.

You can also try jumping it from the battery.

Tried jumping it and it still do the same thing. And I use to watch his car when he went on trips so I'm familiar with driving it/starting it. Any other ideas? :-\

Is the click/clunk coming from starter area? I would re-check that since it was just replaced. I do not know if it is even possible to be mis-aligned, on that model. But turn a key, and you get a clunk, I would think the starter isn't meshing/engaging the flywheel.

The starter may have been cheap for a reason, did it not start/make sound with the new battery in with old starter?

Sound was still there with old starter and new battery and with new starter and actually a even different battery. I actually haven't entirely listened to where the clunk is coming from. But now you have me wondering if it is the SMG transmission.... I mean lets be straight here with this.... it is a SMG lol.

I'm sure you already did it but worth mentioning, check the connections on solenoid/starter, battery, 12v under Hood. Try a different key.

Then from what I gather from the above post, the brake needs to be depressed, so that would mean a switch? And I guess the tranny has one as well. So he could check those switches. Maybe by-pass them just for troubleshootings sake.

He only has one key unfortunately. Yes I checked the connections under the hood. I mentioned it to him to try the brake/switches that have to do with it so I guess will wait and see.

If he lost my tools I'd be unbelievably pissed but I also enjoy beer so that's ok.

Well that'd be hilarious if it was only that. But wouldn't that throw a CEL?. No lights on the dash.

I'm not sure (correct me if I'm wrong) but wouldn't the car still crank with a bad CPS just not ignite?.. Not just "click" then nothing like his friend is experiencing

That's my thinking too. This sounds like a bad ground or 2. Symptoms seem to indicate not enough juice to the starter, or incredibly unlucky, and just got a bad replacement starter. Mal, have you tried rapping on the starter? and not in a fitty cent kind of way

Haha yeah the starters were tested there fine. Both were actually fine. But since we had the intake manifold off and everything we changed it anyways. It's definitely something electrical that's for sure....

Just a wild, wild guess, but try wiggling the key while starting. Maybe, coincidentally the ignition key assembly went bad?

Scary isn't it? The howl you hear is all of the SMG owners realizing that their cars just lost 10K worth of value. If you look at the Roundel classifieds, it seems that many owners are dumping their SMG equipped M3s.
