would you trade 2012 535i for 2010 550i?

so really weird situation. my SA is a good friend of mine and i was complaining to him about the lack of BMWness in the new F10 and how i preferred how my E60 drove. well he called me today all excited. somehow they got a brand new (yes brand new) 2010 550i with only 250 miles on it. not sure of the back story; but never titled. warranty expires in 8/2013. every imaginable option ($82K MSRP). nightvision, active cruise, etc. he's willing to do an even swap on my 12 535i with ~9,600 miles on it (MSRP of $65K). on one hand the F10 is much nicer looking (inside and outside) but the E60 is a nicer drive.. and the NA 8 cylinder is a beautiful engine.. what do you guys think?

Lack of warranty (expiring really soon) and ugly outdated interior.....i wouldn't do it.

Get some ACS springs with the M5 sway bar and you'll be pretty amazed how much better the F10 would be. There is just too much to give up going from the F10 to the E60 unless its for a M5

I have thought about buying an e60 550i as well, but each time I approach one its ugly exterior and old looking interior just discourages me from doing it.

How is your F10 equipped and how much is the value of the swap?

The E6x and E9x was not BMW's finest hour.

I would not trade. The F10 is so much more refined beyond horsepower.

Remember a 2010 E60, was designed with 2000 technology and went into production around 2002.

You are comparing a 10 year old technology to current. It is much more of a difference than 3 model years.

If it's your friend he will give you at least 24h with it. You need to drive it a couple of hours. You will notice the increased NVH and more spartan interior at first but then if you are like me you will not care and you don't want to return it. It happened to me everytime I got an E60 loaner while my F10 was being serviced. On the other hand if you keep missing the undeniable added refinement of the F10 keep it. Again, you need a couple of hours proper driving, zipping around town, cruise on the hwy and some country roads. Also do your commute if you can. It should tell you the answer. I did not like getting back to the F10 after a couple of days in the E60.

How could the warranty be expiring on an untitled "brand new" vehicle? Aren't warranties tied to the purchase date?

Wow- looks very tempting - I prefer E60s. However, after a quick check with Kelly Blue Book trade in values - guessing more or less about specific equipment - your 535i is worth about $46K and the 2010 5501 is worth about $41K.

If your friend is a BMW dealer perhaps he could CPO the 2010 or at least offer you an extended warranty which is worth about $5k at retail more or less - given the price of an extended warranty is negotiable. Bottom line - your friend needs to find some means to bridge $5K.

Hope you find a way - E60 550i is a really nice BMW and with 250 miles - it is an exceptional find.

The interior is very low grade compared to the f10 and honestly what I had decided would be my next car was the 435i 6 spd manual. I'm wary getting into a car with 10 yr old tech.. I may go take a look at it but I'm leaning towards keeping what I have for now

Ouch, active steering. Otherwise it's nicely optioned but as you say it's an old style car and with the 435 around the corner it sounds like a better plan. If it was between keeping the F10 a couple of years or getting the E60 I would go E60 no doubt but with the 435 in the mix I'm less sure. You should do much better in trading the 2012 F10 for a 2014 435 than by trading the 2010.

+1 agreed - I had an e93 335i with sport active steering - it was a huge mistake - the active steering was numb and uncommunicative - I never knew what the front tires were doing. Given that your rational for doing the deal is to get a car that will impart to you a more "traditional" BMW driving experience - I would be very leery. I should note the EPS in my 2013 X3 35i M Sport, while not perfect, is entertaining and much better than in my former 335i. I would imagine the EPS in the coming new 2014 335i will be even better.

Maybe I'm missing something here, but how can a 3 year old car have only 250 miles and never titled? It was just sitting at a dealer lot? Was it a demo vehicle for BMW NA at one point? If your F10 is running fine, I suggest stick with it.

Just FYI 2010 E60 M5 with low mileage is only $45-50k nowadays.

I regretted my decision to buy a new F10 over E60 M5 last time.

I totally agree in term interior. But, there's more reason of buying a car than interior.

Are the specs out for the 435i? Will the car drive better and have a nicer interior than a typical 3-series? Will you buy or lease?

Omaralt,
I am in a similar situation as you but not that far along.
I gave up my 2008 528xi 6mt at the end of the lease and went into a 2011 328i x-drive stick instead of the F10 for I wanted awd and stick.
I miss my 5 series terribly despite the fact that the 2011 3-series has perfect steering and perfect balance. It is just smaller and less comfortable than the five it replaced.
I'm looking to swap the lease on my current 2011 3 series and go to a 550i 6mt, 2013. I regret losing the '08 5 series. I don't want to regret going into an F-10 over the '11 3 series.
The responsiveness of the steering is just magical in the '11 3!
I do agree with the above posts that the interior and electronics continues to improve.
I love the '11 user friendliness over the '08 and I'm sure the '13 is that much better.
I drive bmw for it is the ultimate driving machine. I don't drive it for the interior or electronics. The f-10 just worries me compared to the older bimmers. I understand your desire to go back to the '10 5 series. Drive it and see if it rekindles the magic.
gjsnow.
I never liked the looks of the previous 5 series. While inside, you cannot see the car. It just felt soooooo nice!

i'm planning on getting Msport with the DHP. i was almost certain i wanted the 6spd manual but honestly after seeing how amazing this 8spd i'm considering one with the SAT. obviously i'm getting all the other packages as well (tech, premium, etc). still need my creature comforts

ya i've decided against it after looking at pictures and reviews of the E60. i actually dont mind the exterior so much, but the interior is pretty bad IMO; especially compared to the F10. i was just very intrigued by the car due to it still being a "new" car and only having 250 miles on it. if anybody is interested in it it's at ferman bmw in tampa, FL.

The E60 is so ugly and it looks so dated. There's a better chance of me considering the F10 switch to an E39 540i-Sport or E39 M5 than an E60 550i or M5. They should have skipped the E60. Definitely the worst of the Bangle era as even the facelifts couldn't help it.

I agree...but even aside from the interior, the e60 was never something to turn my head and take a second look it. Its just natural to say it looks outdated now. That's just how it works when new models come out.

Not a chance. The E60 drove me to Mercedes Benz for 4 straight cars and the F10 brought me back for a trial run.... Trial done, F10 goes above and beyond!

No way I would go from a F10 to a E60. The F10 is such as hugh improvment in every catagory except handling. The active steering in the E60 would null that advantage anyways. Like others have said, just mod the suspension on the F10 and call it a day.

With the lease numbers available on the 550 right now, there's no way I'd consider an E60 over it.
