N52 Production Date to Casting Numbers

I recently came across a used N52 at a great price while looking for other stuff on Craigslist. I got it from an old school mechanic who did a swap for a friend of his Son's who was convinced he needed a new engine. He said it was running and he was able to back it off the flatbed and pull it into his shop although it was running rough. Said it came from a 2008 328i. He supposedly didn't do any diagnostics but just swapped the engine for the guy.

Anyway after getting it home and doing some research I am still not sure exactly what I have. The tag on the intake side says "N52B30AE" and it has the black plastic valve cover. The head has "201106" and the oil pan has "301106" which I assume are production dates but I can't find anything that looks like a date on the block. I also can't find a VIN on the motor. The thing that is throwing me is the 06 date if it came from a 2008 model year car. I am aware of the issues with the early models and the changes that were made so I would like to know exactly what I have.

I read the SIB that gives casting numbers but mine doesn't match.

Does anyone know how to correlate the serial number or casting number to production dates?

Really? No one has a handy table mapping these numbers to dates. You guys are usually full of this type of data.

I took the valve cover off and found nothing out of order. It was the cleanest valve train I have ever seen. My plan is to put it back together and find a car to put it in. Once it is running I can go about diagnosing the problem.

The problem is that the date codes can sometimes be incredibly cryptic / unintuitive. It's entirely possible that "...06" does not mean 2006.

I believe the only changes that were made to this engine along its production run were to the cylinder head and valve train. If you can find the part # cast into the cylinder head, then you may be able to cross reference it on realoem.com to figure out if it's the latest version.

Good luck,
