Going to the dark-er side (Dking078's interior build thread)

First off, no i didn't sell my baby!

My goal in this project is to make a b-e-a-utiful grey/black two tone interior in good taste.

I had gotten my inspiration from a member on one of the forums, who did a perfect ratio of black-grey.

Part 1: Trim

First and most important part of this project..... TRIM. I like wood, don't get me wrong, but in a grey/black interior it really pops out.
I had to choose between piano black or technical graphite, aka Cubic. PB was nice, but i feared swirls, so TG/C it was.

The one problem was finding the dam trim. Everyone wanted either it's weight in silver or sold it literally as conservatively as possible.
Thankfully I was able to find a near perfect set for a good price that had ALL the pieces, and even a no-cutout for TPMS (thank god!) Talk about luck!

Technical graphite is just an amazing trim and is undersold in these photos.

Enough of that time for pics!

Part 2: Oh the bass

Don't get me wrong here, the Nokia subs are nice, but i want some bass when i listen to the radio. The perfect OEM upgrade..... M audio subs!
Those 2 big 10 inchers pack a serious punch. You can literally feel it in the seat. Listening to techno? Let me just shatter the glass beforehand. They are just fantastic... But chasing down the rattles in the rear deck was a serious pain.

Part 3: Going to the dark-er side

Here is where the real fun begins! I choose to blacken every plastic piece in a good flowing line. Tough it's not complete yet, I have some "under construction" pics.

I wanted to use a normal 5 series black console, but the world seemed to be against me! None to be found or heard of. There was a light at the end of the tunnel though, a nice M5 leather console was waiting for me! Big thanks to M5 Jed for all the plastic parts and many parts for this project !

At first I thought the console would clash too much because of the stitching, but the ebrake helped even it out and the leather pattern was close to the normal grey "leather". The only hard part was that the M5 console had all broken plastic tabs! Took me 13 or so hours of fabrication & alot of test fitting to get a good fit. In the end I was left with a small gap, no worries since it's black.

The overall tone i wanted to get was to show that the grey was overlapping black bits (Kind of like a Range Rover).

Lol yes it looks ugly, but in the end it worked very well. Can't get any better than using denture material, that stuff is pretty strong!

Then back to assembly and beauty pics of most plastics installed.

Sadly the lower B pillars I got were for a pre 02 car, I never would have guessed! ('Im open to black ones in SoCal people!) PM me!

Up next:
Black seat control covers
Black front midbass grill cover
Black Seat rail plastic
Technical Graphite Cupholder delete trim
Black Ebrake leather boot
Black side net

Looks great so far!!!

I've always been a fan of two tone interiors.

My mustang is tan/black. Just enough of each.

I've been debating on going with a black center console (I have grey interior also) and I think you just pushed me into it.

Looks great!

I keep having to remind myself that it wasn't my E39
We pretty much have the same idea, but you're a little ahead of me. I'll catch up in no time since I was done with my Z32 interior now.

Love it! Very clever thinking and completely works for the interior!

Any errors in this post are purely Swype's fault, not mine.

Hey that looks awesome! We must be brothers from another mother because I have had that same idea for black mats w/ leather console. It looks AWESOME! Thanks for posting, you give me full confidence in doing this in about 6 months

The Tech graphite is really what makes the big difference, the grey interior really should have come with this as standard. Much more balanced, classy. How much fun did you have doing the shifter? I broke the old trim I pulled off the shifter, that stuff was tough to get off! I was so paranoid about damaging the new piece going in.

I got lucky when i found the trim as the seller had just listed it, so i was able to request each part as a whole, meaning i got the entire shifter! It was just a simple pull off the old one and insert the new one. The cd cover bracket was a PITA to get in/out.

Phase 2/3 now!

A few more bits are in coming in the mail.

The sucky part is, the finishing touch. The Technical Graphite cupholder delete needs to be shipped from good ol Germany, and takes 3-5 weeks yeah!

I plan to have the car done and ready for Bimmerfest West-siiide.

Here are some new pics!

Black E-brake time. I can't say enough how well the black stitching flows with this whole center console combo!

Behold the E39 side net! It complements the gray/black tone nicely.

And then black lower B pillars to match the headliner.

I'll see anyone who is at the LTMW meet tomorrow!

Nice!!

Any shots of the back seat showing the B pillar? I have those in black right now, just been debating putting them in. I guess it looks really nice with alcantara! I wish I had that headliner, overall looks good.

I couldn't get a good pic, so I took the seat out ... jk jk, kinda.

More pics of the 99% finished project tomorrow. Took about 10hrs to re-work the center console for the 1000th time and fit the seat trim, shampoo carpet, and fix the dreaded twisted seat.

Just finished up the last bit, though i'm still waiting for the finish touch of the cup holder delete.

In total the project took a solid 4-5 days of pure work. Getting the trim to sit in the console without any gaps took forever since I had to rebuild the entire panel from scratch, but i prevailed for the most part. Sucky part is that my soldering gun somehow ouch my console trim , no worries anyway it's trashed up from the previous owner and I intend to get a new one later on.

The Speaker door grills was pretty straight foreward, and I'll have a DIY up shortly.

For some reason the trim set for the seat rails ECS sent me was somehow 1 full set + 1 piece (long rail cover) for the opposite seat 0.0... Don't know why it comes like that, but I was able to steal some parts fromt the older 5 .

Brothers meet!

After

I can't help but notice the aux cord(headphone jack) coming out below your armrest. Have you considered a 3.5mm(headphone)to-bluetooth adapter? Costs about $20 dollars and simply connects to the aux cord/port.

Here is a link to the model of the one I purchased for $20.
http://www.meritline.com/bluetooth-a...FRQbnAodjXwA8Q

I did not purchase the one I have from the website linked here. The one I purchased is actually black which would go with the theme you've got going on.

It's about the size of a USB flash drive and works like a charm. I have a tape adapter + one of these puppies and I couldn't be happier. No pricey parts for me . It needs to be powered of course but it's small enough that you can mount it discreetly. I have my powered by USB currently.

Nice, idea, but I usually just have my phone plugged into the jack and take calls from that way. I'm somewhat looking for a OEM soultion, but yes, the cost is crazy.

I've been doing good with using my phone with its voice command though.

There are other bluetooth models that have mic's that come with. I have to disconnect mine from bluetooth to take a call, which is the only downfall of the one that I choose. Good friend of mine has a Belkin model I believe. I'm pretty sure he takes calls with it. He paid $20-$25.

The car looks 100% better with the new trim. Outstanding job. I would not have touched the speaker grills though. Sometimes less is more.

Yay that was one the bit i was always iffy about.
I put it in to "pop" and pull more attention to the door panel, and well they do get my attention while driving.
It may flow better if I made the door storage slots carpet black, like in the M5 caramel interior, but that is alot more cost/work.

That's where i drew my line

I've been contemplating doing something similar to my car. The past two cars I've owned I've done extensive panel painting on this inside and I enjoyed the turnout. The only parts I'm considering painting are the plastic pieces under both front seats(you did this), the plastic piece below both door opening handles(behind the large handle on door) and the coin holder on the driver door.

Since you did not do the plastic piece behind the door handle or the coin holder assembly, I was curious what your thoughts on it were. How does the speaker look in person? It seems like it stands out quite a bit with just the speaker but pictures don't always do it justice so it could look phenomenal in person . I would only do this after I picked up the interior trim similar to what you have of course.

The last picture you posted with the orangish leather BMW has the plastic piece behind the door handled painted black. Doing this might make the speaker stand out less, assuming that it stands out in person in the first place.

The speaker definitely draws attention. I may attempt to make the door card storage space black (like the picture) I'll experiment on how to do it using my older e39 broken door panel. If i can successfully reattach it, i may consider a swap (i'd put the old gray ones in the old car either dyed of left alone.

EDIT: I dug though my giant folder of E39 pics.

Here's what it would basically look like (Door panels) This is an M5 with Ivoy Interior

Thoughts?

Well, i plan to change back the grills before Bimmerfest, but good news is, I got the cup holder delete from Germany much faster thgan expected!
Pics of the final shots after bimmerfest!

Getting the delete in was a bit of a pain since it fits perfectly, it has 0 wiggle room and i was fearing breaking the clips. Thank god for no more useless cupholers!
Great mod for $22 and those with Technical graphite / Cubic trim.
