Cracked windshield - covered by warranty?

So pulled into the garage yesterday and noticed a crack in the windshield just about 2" above the bottom of the windshield. No stone chip, etc. just a crack about 8-10" long that starts around where the windshield wiper is.

Is this covered by warranty? I called BMW assist and she stated to take it in and "they can determine if it's a manufactures defect".

What is other people's experience?

I have called my insurance company and they will have Safelite replace with my $500 deductible of course but rather have BMW replace under warranty if all possible.

Thanks in advance

Dang, sorry about that. That's pretty wild, no chip, but just a long crack. All out of nowhere, from nothing to 9" long?

I have got* to finally remember to inquire about windshield insurance. The guy who did my bumper repaint highly recommended I do so, particularly with my car, he said it was probably going to cost me only several bucks a year.

This will test your persuasive skills to their max .... you might want to edit your sig joyride on the A92 in case your dealer reads this thread!

There's a history of cracked outside mirrors on the E92 that were replaced under warranty. In the case of my car, it was a cold weather thing, one day after delivery in Munich. A three-year-old car seems like a harder case, but I would expect BMW to be fair about it.

I wouldn't discount it, and I'll tell you my story so you know why.

I had a baseball sized rock come off a truck (2 lanes over I wasn't dumb enough to be near him but it wasn't good enough), bounce off the pavement and hit my windshield+ driver side pillar. I had to have paint and the pillar fixed so the glass is covered by my comprehensive claim, and they put an OEM BMW windshield back on.

The new windshield had fisheyes in several spots so I return to the place, which is owned by the dealership. Instead of fixing it on their dime, he had me go over to the service center where the service manager did it as a warranty claim.

Obviously they were trying to get someone else to pay for the glass, and it was an actually defective piece, but my point is you should ask!

I have a appt at 9am tomorrow to drop it off: I'll post back to know what they say. Not gettting my hope up but it's worth a couple of hours of my time to see if its covered. I'll try to get a picture of it tonight but doubt it will show up very easily in a photo.

For the ones who have had an entire windshield replaced by safelite remotely - how in the heck to they drop it in? I just assumed they need some large special tool to properly place it just correctly and accurately? How is this done at your house/work?

Anything to look out for too if it's replaced by them? I do have rain sensing wipers. I assume the new sensor comes on the new windshield? Does it just unhook from the rear mirror? Do they need to "reset" anything?

they attach a pair of very large suction cupped handles to both sides of the glass. i think its a two man job, they lower the glass into the frame manually.

as long as you specified the rainsensor in the order, everything will be plug and play, i would just test the auto wipers with a hose after the glue sets (a few hours). nothing needs to be reset, IIRC, the sensor isnt being replaced, it gets transplanted to the new windshield

safelite backs their work with a warranty, so if there are any issues they'll fix it on their dime.

ok, great. I always seen it done with laser guided machines on the assembly line do it so was very curious how "humanoid's" would do it. haha! Yes, was already thinking about spraying some water on it later that day to make sure everything works right away.

i wouldnt worry about it too much, i had safelite replace my e90 windshield no problem. got an upgraded saint gobain OE winshield. my 2010 had the decontented, no shade no climate comfort glass.

tbh i would trust them more than the dealer-- most of the time the dealer just farms this work out to safelite or another glass company, and if they dont, they probably replace less windshields in a month than safelite does in a day or week.

iirc, there are glass guides within the frame, the installer just needs to make sure the glass is centered in the frame and that the urethane glue is applied properly (uniform bead, not too much, not too little) and that the rubber mouldings are replaced properly.

just do the water test and check for wind noise.

Check your policy. Some of them provide free replacement (no deductible). If it's the $100 safelite service (fix a crack) then for my insurance it was no deductible - i mean $500 deductible on a $100 repair is lame. You also don't have to use safelite. I told the insurance company I use BMW to do all of my repair work, the windows are not standard (they aren't there is all kind of electronics associated to them). My insurance company paid the full amount (forget how much, but under 500, I think 300) for BMW to do the work

I notice that today, Obama calls for a month devoted to teaching our young to budget prudently.

Keep that in mind, and stick to yer guns, sir!

Pay no attention to groveling, self-serving SA toadies insisting that you pay. They are in the employ of Capitalists who stop at nothing to part you from your money.

Explore every venue. Though excluded from warranty, that does not indemify BMW dealers against responsibility! No. Name the vile dealer who denies your claim, and post to every BMW board you can find. Write a scathing Yelp review - they'll see that! Your effort should not end until you are paid in full, with not a cent out-of-pocket.

Vanos4, welcome to the movement! Following Obama, we must make those with more than us responsible. Change the balance of power! All power to the users!

Unhappy Busted my windshield backhanding a bug

Just broke mine this morning and BMW said it's not covered under warranty. I then called my insurance and luckily I do have glass coverage and no deductible. They recommended Safelite and I already have an appointment for Monday am to get it replace. Will update you all then!

I am thrilled with our dealer. Few months ago, my wife and I noticed a distortion on the right side of the GT's windshield and the service manager offered and did replace the windshield with no hesitation or pushback, whatsoever.

Good luck to you.

why would you cracking the windshield by hitting it with your hand be a material defect?

One of the benefits of living in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts -- windshields are replaced with no deductible charge. The Commonwealth says that a cracked windshield is a safety issue, and so is a no charge item.

Cracked windshield - covered by warranty?

Does this count as a claim against what the insurance company uses to determine your rates?

here in canada, insurance claim coverage may differ but they wanted me to have speedyglass or apple glass replace my winshield with aftermarket windshield. They were not willing to cover the extra cost for having it installed from a dealer. I just kept on insisting but they did not listen.
HOWEVER, i still went with BMW stealership to replace my windshield and agreed to pay the difference in cost from a speedyglass windshield. So basically i was supposed to pay an extra $300.00 over my deductible amount and rest would be covered by insurance. Somehow, my insurance company changed their mind at the end and said that since the difference was only $300.00, they were going to pay for it all minus my deductible.
I may have gotten lucky with my claims person but worth a shot to try and persuade them for covering the difference.

Thumbs up Safelite

All done getting my OEM windshield replaced and the rain sensor, homelink, and compass are all functioning well. Nice job done by Safelite and the cure time for the adhesive was 1.5 hrs and I was told to stay out of car washes for 2 days!

I've had 3 windshields replaced by Safelite, on 540i, Yukon and 993, it took a couple of hours and they came to my house, no issues.
I only had 1 slightly negative experience, they couldn't replace one in the 911 because they bought the wrong windshield and wrong gasket.
I have $0 deductible for comprehensive for this reason, doesn't affect rates for me. I always insist on factory glass for higher-end vehicles.
They make a fuss but I stick to my guns, I figure that's why I pay higher cost insurance for these cars and I don't want aftermarket glass.
