2001 Z3 - Subwoofer

Any suggestions -- My subwoofer sounds like it rattles like its blown. I check it out can not see any problems. looks like a 5 inch speaker and a box behind it. Has any one replaced the subwoofer or same problems Im having ?

I had the same problem. Now this may seem silly, but I just wedged a piece of foam up against the speaker and it stopped the buzz and it sounds fine. Since I'm not an audiophile, I really can't hear the difference especially since the top is down most of the time and the wind is blowing past my ears at a high rate of speed.

This has been discussed many times and there are many threads on it. Repairs range from adding silicone to the speaker cone to replacing the speaker with a ComptVT65 Kicker.

Near the top of the page, on the right, is a button called "Search This Forum." Click that and enter "subwoofer" and you should see lots of ideas.

Note that pre-2000 cars had two 5.25" subwoofers while post 2000 had a single 6.5" subwoofer, which is the more desirable version. As you look through the threads, you can ignore the ones based on the earlier design.

When I bought my 2001 the subwoofer was OK, but the kick panel speakers were both blown. I used the silicone caulk fix that people use on the subwoofer.

Sent mine to Orange County Speaker...I think it was $65.00 for a new surround. Sounds great now. My experience is that the silicone will only last a while. The surround becomes too brittle to hold the caulk.

I had the non-HK subwoofer in my Z3 but being 17 blew the foam surround and then blew the second one we fixed it with. I ordered a HK subwoofer box off ebay and trashed its blown 6.5" subwoofer. Then bought a Kicker CompVT6.5 and followed a tutorial on here. Ill post a ling below. All in all, i Paid $150 and it is WAY better than what i had. Soon as i upgrade everything else it will be even better.
