You can expect to spend about $5k give or take to do this upgrade.

Google it. you'll find lots on the topic.

I have a friend that did it on his '07 M6. It's a big and complicated job but it can be done.

Expect alot of coding.

The iDrive actually runs on an Commodore operating system. I love it personally. I finally have a fancy navigation screen, but the maps are from like the 80's, it's great. Hell, my street is blank, that's good since I don't want anyone else with an iDrive coming over ever.

Are you sure about that? According to Wikipedia iDrive uses VxWorks which is also used on the Apache Longbow and a several of the Mars rovers.

Yorgi is correct, although I didn't have to replace my iDrive controller because my car is LCI

That would finally explain the navigation instructions.

Take a left at Saturn and follow the Milky Way till you get to Mars. Then turn right...

LOL....this is why I carry a Garmin in my center console, just in case I need "real" directions.
