CLA AMG (Nov 2013) vs 335i

They just announced pricing for the US 2014 CLA AMG at $48k, putting it right around a 335i. 0-60 in 4.5 sec, turbocharged and direct-injected 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine, which develops 355 horsepower and 332 pound-feet of torque.

Thoughts? I prefer the F30 styling by a lot, although the CLA AMG interior is nice and sporty, exterior is awkward from removing the hatch.

But word from EU car mags is the hatch version is a real driver's car atypical of Mercedes, so maybe it has a chance against a 335i Sport.

As 3 series alternatives go, I'd take this over an ATS.

Great looking car but lack of tranny options means I would pass on it. It should give the 335 a run for its money though, it's stylish and Merc makes great engines. Will it handle as well as the bimmer though is the question. Still, if I had to choose between this and the 335, I'd choose the 335. However if it handles well, I would take this over Audi. (Cadillac isn't even in the equation)

Yeah, at least it's a DSG, not a slushbox.

I'm kind of glad we didn't get the hatchback in 6 speed manual, then I'd be faced with the real hard choice of whether I'm willing to be seen driving a Benz.

Styling looks awesome/that's a great value for 48k but for me living in NJ I need speed, sportiness and... all wheel drive. I've gotten stuck one too many times in the snow w/ RWD and sport tires.

It's AWD.

I don't like the way it looks. The nose is really big, the whole side view droops front/back, and the wheels look tiny for such a bulbous body.

It'll be great if the hatch version will come across the pond.

It's a fwd based car with haldex awd added. So is my Saab lol. It does not have the bones and architecture of a 50/50 balanced sporty platform that is then saddled with awd like other sports sedans.

Its more in line with the Golf R and awd Volvos. The Audi S3 costs less and will have a better aftermarket and looks great, nice and trim like a b5 s4.

It looks like a Nissan Maxima from that point of view.

Red calipers are nice though...

Not a fan of the instrumentation...

Not a bad looking car. The biggest factor to consider this car is that it is quite a bit smaller than an F30 right? I like smaller cars but no manual transmission is a deal breaker for me. Also, the legendary inline six cylinder in a 335i has to be horribly underrated at 300hp. I also feel that my 328i has to have about 30 more horsepower than the 240 claimed. I'd bet that the horsepower figures in the CLA are only what they claim. 350hp for a turbo four cylinder is amazing but that has to be about the end of possibility for an engine that size. Also, don't forget the sound of the inline six in the 335i. I doubt the Benz will even come close in that respect.

Actually no. It might be similar in size to a Corolla but I'm guessing that the dynamics of this car are at one end of the spectrum while the Corolla is at the other.

And do you really think that two liters is a big engine? Perhaps for a yard tractor. This is a little engine making big power.

We really have to wait and see how this sucker comes together as of now, we are only making wag's. I like the looks withe exception of the air vents which seem a little over-dressed.

Anyhow, it could be a fun car.

In terms of looks I'd take this over the 335i in a heartbeat. Nice size, aggressive styling and there probably won't be as many on the road. Would definitely pass on the hatchback though.

It's FWD? Then it's even worse than I thought. No torque steer please.

Its FWD based, then with added haldex type AWD. When a car is designed to be FWD, it's architecture is hard to get away from regardless of adding AWD. Would be interesting to see the weight balance. The FWD CLA is probably 58/42 and with AWD, the AMG is maybe 54/46 or something.

My first thought after seeing the side view: hmm, what kind of Mazda is that?

Totally doesn't look like a Benz to me. It's like they're trying to be Japanese. It looks ok, but just not German. And the interior too...kind of Japanese looking.

Eh...I like the 335 better, and that doesn't even take driving into consideration.

I definitely agree that from the side, it looks like a generic Asian car. Mazda, Nissan Maxima, Hyundai, take your pick...

It's not Haldex from what I read, just similar in that it's front-biased with max 50% power to the rear, selectable from the dash, meaning the comfort/sport etc mode affects the AWD as well as throttle and shift speed. Unlike VWs it has defeatable stability control.

I don't really care about weight balance or architecture, they are minor factors in fun compared to tuning and design choices. BMW makes some really boring-to-drive cars with 50/50 weight balance and rear drive. It's all about tuning.

It certainly doesn't look Japanese from most angles. I think the slope toward the back looks awkward though, but it looks similar to other Benzes.

I was thinking the same thing - that's around the time I'll probably be ready to trade in the E46.

Audi S3 sedan or 5 door, new GTI, GTD or Golf R, CLA AMG, with any luck, a 2 series gran coupe - that's the one I'm most hopeful for.

I still hope to see AMG CLA45 hatch version. For some reason, it appears the hatch version will provide better rear headroom. The seatings are looking great.

Its actually longer than a c class or a f30. So its not a small car.

For me the fwd based architecture kills it. If I'm spending 40k+ on a Car might as well get one with the engine pointed longitudinally without the torsional stress and balance issues. More power isn't everything.... 335i hell even ,328i with ecu upgrades would be my choice
