I don't really care about weight balance or architecture, they are minor factors in fun compared to tuning and design choices. BMW makes some really boring-to-drive cars with 50/50 weight balance and rear drive. It's all about tuning.

It certainly doesn't look Japanese from most angles. I think the slope toward the back looks awkward though, but it looks similar to other Benzes.

They don't need to call it Haldex, MB can call the AWD in this car whatever it wants.

I still say, my bet is the S3 will be a better driving car and have a better aftermarket. Will be interesting once both are available for a drive.

I've got my fingers crossed that the US will get the M135i in 4 door Gran Coupe form.

The car keeps getting rave reviews; the latest EVO magazine picked it first over a bunch of extreme hot hatches (which we don't get), saying it was so much fun to drive.

As a 3x MBZ owner (all pre 2000) I'm convinced the CLA will look like an overstuffed cocktail olive in person. MBZ hasn't designed one aesthetically pleasing car since 1994. That's when Benz began copying Lexus, a mark that was born to copy it. Today's Benz looks gaudy and artificial. They drive better than they look but not compared to a BMW IMO. I pass!

Ever since Audi built the 2007+ RS4, I've held no prejudice against a FWD-built platform.

Static weight distribution also really does not mean that much at the end of the day within a certain range. Heck, the f30 handles notably better simply due to the 4-cyl vs. 6-cyl.

Lets see how it drives.

I wonder how many festers will actually left the brand when BMW switches over to FWD.

BMW is switching over to FWD starting with next generation 1 series. They are sharing platform with MINI from cost standpoint.

Not applicable. This is a 3 series forum. The 3 Series is NOT switching to FWD...

The only reason I'm bringing it up because both CLA sedan & hatch are more comparable to 1 series or Audi A3 (BTW, another gorgeous looking sedan).

Don't get me wrong, I 'm okay with them making more profit on certain models as long as there are always RWD in certain models such as M3 & M4.

BTW, congrats on the new ride !

My only comment to MB... Way to take a s* on the AMG brand. I really hope ///M never sells a car for under 60k.

So you're ok with an X5M, but look down on an E30 M3?

You totally missed the point - M or AMG engineers salivate at the chance to make a smaller, lighter, driver's car. The big luxo barges they are forced to turn into M cars pay the bills, but aren't as fun to design.

Wowza! What a vote of confidence! I would say you are 100% correct for about 12 years - until the current run of F30 and future G30 (?) runs out. After that, all bets are off. Why? If, by 2025, 80% of U.S. 3-series are sold as X-drive and more than 50% European sales are the same ... what incentive exactly does BMW have to make way more expensive RWD? You'll still have a choice to buy an ///M3 for that, but not a pedestrian 3-series.

How exactly will they do it to keep costs down? Well, modular ///M series platform, modular FWD for most of everything else. Higher nominations of 5 and 7 series can get modular ///M bones, everybody else drives a Maxima. Or Passat, if you want.

You don't like it? Well, next time your friends order a BMW, make sure they think LONG and HARD if they really, but really, really and absolutely NEED that X-drive. Just sayin' ...

Lets see how it drives.

The a4 / s4 even the b7 has a longitudinal mounted engine just like say a 3 series would. Its effectively a rwd style platform with torsen awd just Audi mounts the engine a little farther forward so its a little worse balance wise. Audi has a transaxle on it so it will be fwd on base a4. Only reason its not rwd is Audi lives by selling people on quattro.

The a3 / TT is based on the golf transverse mounted engine platform with haldex style awd. Its significantly different. The tt / a3 are well not "true" Audis some Audi enthusiasts would say. I wouldn't judge the s3 based on what the rs4 Is like at all. Totally different cars.

IMO The interior is hideous. It looks like a merc and a riced-out honda civic had a love child and the bastard got the worst qualities of each parent.

Am I the only one who thinks the "carbon fiber" interiors look tacky?

This car looks like it would be standard issue for Jersey Shore cast members and mooky nouveau rich frat guys everywhere.

Good point, although the TT-RS and Golf R are better driver's car than any A4-based car, so I wouldn't judge the S3 based on the A4 cars either.

i think thats mostly because they are just smaller and lighter than well the rather porky A4 sized cars ( then again an A4 is almost 2 feet longer than a golf R / TT), though surprisingly not that much lighter.

im not saying FWD is all bad or anything you can make a really fun FWD type car.

but i suppose the potential isnt as high. in the end if you buy a golf R for the $35k it costs, you are in 1 series territory. or a tt-RS is almost in boxster/ cayman land. i guess my point is it better be the best FWD based implementation ever, or else you are always a pretty small dollar amount away from a car on a platform that was really meant for sportier cars.

i've driven a lot of FWD cars that were a ton of fun (used to own a first gen TSX... great car for what it is,) but i guess if you are inthe price range, theres always some non transverse FWD option.

Exactly, 12 years out, and anything after that is purely speculative.

Why do you think by 2025 that 80% of US 3-series sold will be AWD? Has there been any study or market evaluation that suggests so?

However, I will admit that where I live, they sell 328 AWDs more than anything right now. That's all I ever see around here, and most of the 328s on the lot were AWDs.

Also, 12 years is a very very long time in the car industry. So I am not sure what that has to do with here-and-now, and comparing the Mercedes CLA AMG with the 3.

This is a real AMG car though, like an 1M rather than an M135i.
