328is vs m3

Im kind of a noob so forgive me but uhh i thought it'd be interesting to discuss the main differences between an M3 and a 328is obviously the engines are different and ones faster then the other but how much faster? im just wondering because the body styles are almost identical.

Well, I'm pretty sure you can make an m3 clone with just a front bumper and a ///M logo on the trunk according to my research on Craigslist. Soooo those must be the only differences...

As far as the body is concerned, the only things are....

Moldings
Bumpers
Mirrors
Sideskirts

That's it.

Har dee har har Alan.

I got the pleasure of pullin up to a "clone" M3 the other night. Both at the front of the intersection, but I was in the turn lane. As we were sitting there 2 e36 m3's rolled through the intersection following each other. I just wanted to know what that guy was thinking.

Just to be clear, I have absolutely no problem with anyone putting M goodies all over the car, because they do just make the car look sportier. But the badge is where I have the biggest problem.

In the end, if you are building a car for any type of racing the cars will be almost identical after you beef everything up. You will just be about 3-4k poorer because you had to have the M3. M3's are also generally in better condition(not always the case). Most people with one can be would be considered an enthusiast while all the other e36's tend to just be a "car" to people who drive them.

Having owned both, there is no way I would try to make a normal e36 into an ///M.... just too much work for too little reward.

Although in many cases M3s have been beat on hard because they are an enthusiast car. It all depends.

Thats why I just decided to buy the M. In the long run it's cheaper and easier because everything is already upgraded.

When you get down to all the little stuff I think like 75% of the crap on my car has an "///M" imprinted on it somewhere haha

That true too. Either or, I've seen perfect high mileage 318's around, and low mileage M3's that are just beat to shlt. All depends on the owner like Karl said.

I'm pretty sure the rear sub-frame bushings are the same, but the control arm bushings are different, and the M3s have reinforced metalwork where the rear sub-frame mounts to the chassis.

It is absolutely impossible. The blinker fluid reservoir is completely different and isn't interchangeable.

Yes, it is the most common engine swap on a non-M e36.

Also for bushings, the RTAB's are different.

The other difference I've found (have driven both) is how they drive.
How you drive, where you drive are important.
Looks are not equivalent to action.

Since you're in morgan hill, just take your vehicle to Dinan and leave a blank check. Come back in a month and stop asking us weird questions.

*thread jack alert*

I have one for you guru's.....I was told by the previous owner my 328is has the "M sport package"...After running my VIN number I have found it does indeed have some M goodies from the factory most of which are for appearance...Bumpers, side molding, steering wheel, sport seats, M3 mirrors, etc

It looks just like a damn M3 except for the wheels..

now my question..

The VIN look up also mentioned sport suspension, does this mean I have the M3 suspension or something in between the M3 and a 328is ??

Copy and paste of what I found..

S704A M SPORTFAHRWERK M Sports suspension
S710A M LEDERLENKRAD M sports steering wheel, multifunction
S715A M AERODYNAMIKPAKET M Aerodynamics package
