Can't Find my Car

So yes, I'm a little older and becoming a little more forgetful. The scenario: Visiting many busy parking garages during a recent trip and forget where my vehicle is parked. Maybe this has never happened to anyone else but for me (maybe not a common occurance) it has. My previous vehicle allowed me to push the "lock" button on the remote and the horn would sound. My new 2011 328i xdrive does not seem to have this feature; or does it? Is there a computer command that will sound the horn or must I begin making notes where I park?

Before March 2009, the alarm wiring was pre-installed on all cars at the factory. Installing the alarm was a simple matter of plugging a control module into a ready-to-go recess. On one of those cars, a somewhat snarky "Install the alarm" might be a good response to your question.

However, because you have a 2011, the alarm wiring is not in place unless you pre-ordered the alarm from the factory. Installing it after the car is built is a non-trivial matter, and you dealer will charge you $$$, assuming he even tries to do it.

In your case, you may want to try aftermarket alarm installers as well as the dealer. It will likely not be inexpensive regardless of which option you choose.

Do you have a smartphone?
Yes -Then just use the note app to quickly record where you parked.
No- Put a little notepad and pen in your glovebox and write it down

Problem solved

There was an iphone BMW ap that would locate my 2011 F10 with a pin dot on a detailed map within .6 miles and would also blow the horn and flash the lights .... not sure if your car has that capability?

There is a setting for having the lights flash whenever you press the lock/unlock button on the fob. I would guess it can be coded to included a horn confirmation as well. Go to the coding forums and find someone locally who can do it for you. If not, read the NYT article fb88 linked for info on the Auto-Finder.

Did you try setting off the panic alarm? You hold the truck release button for a few seconds.

If you have an iPhone and BMW Assist, download the app My BMW Remote.

Top Gear UK had an episode this season dedicated to building a car to appease to old age generation. They outfitted a car with a device to help you find it in a shopping mall parking lot - first you deploy a pair of flares to pin point a rough location if your car, and then a pop-up balloon is emerging to narrow down your search

This is a free app from BMW that does not require BMW Assist or the BMW Remote app.

It's called BMW Parking Assistant. Besides acting as a countdown timer for parking duration, it gives you walking directions back to the very place you parked your car.

Watch the video.
