Roof Rack Question

My 328i will arrive in May sometime I expect. I want to get a roof rack sorted out so I can put my canoe on it soon after the car arrives.

I currently have a Yakima rack on my 1999 Audi A4. I don't know if the Q towers from the Yakima will fit the 328 or not, but I did notice that BMW sells a rack that looks like it might fit into factory mount points. Does anyone have experience with this rack?

BMW Base Support System 82712295099

The price on the BMW site is a modest $259. It is odd that when you add it to your cart it gives an "installed" price of $315.55. What "installation" is there? Is this just the dealer putting it on your roof for you?

If the BMW rack fits into factory mount points on the roof that is a plus since the Yakima Q towers have to hook under the roof inside the doors, deforming the rubber weatherseals at the top.

the f30 has hardpoints under flip open covers on the roof-- the base supports bolt directly to the roof. as it comes in the box, you apply protective plastic to the mount points (to keep the feet from grinding into the roof, use a bolt they include to chase the threads, then bolt the towers to the roof. then you adjust and tighten the load bars. a security torque wrench is included.

you can get the base roof rack from bmw dealers on ebay for about 200 shipped. the rack bars are very similar to thule aero bars (some say the rack is oem'ed by thule for bmw). i use a thule snowboard mount without any issues with the bmw base rack

Thanks

Does the BMW roof mount go on and off the car pretty easily? I would only put it on when I needed it and then remove it when done.

I think so, i can do it by myself in a few minutes. takes me longer to bring the bars to the garage from my apt. flip open the covers, position feet over the bays created, tighten four bolts till the torque line on the wrench lines up. removal is even easier, just loosen the bolts and take the bars off, flip closed the covers.
