F22 / F23 2 Series (2014 - Current)
The 2 Series coupe is the replacement for the E82/E88 1 series coupe. Production starts in November 2013 on the 228i (N20) and M235i (N55) coupes. Look for them in dealerships in February 2014. The convertible F23 2 series will follow in the fall of 2014.

Mein Auto: M235i. When it comes out.
Unknown information at this time. Their have been spy shots of the 2 series and 2 series grand coupe testing so it will most likely be out by the 2015 model year.

I know the rumor is the M2 will be a turbo four, but I'm skeptical, because the M135i gets rave reviews, saying it's almost as good as the 1M. A turbo four M2 might be slower than the M235i, I don't think BMW would want that.

On the other hand it would truly get back to their roots, I hope they make it a four. Those who want a six can get the M235i.

Rumor is it's a 4 cylinder turbo, not the six.

Reason I could see it being true is that all the M engines are essentially being downsized and turbo-charged compared to the prev gen so:
M5: V10->V8 turbo
M3: V8->I6 turbo
M2: N/A-> ??

They're not going to put the M3's engine in the M2 so what does that leave them? They could do something simklar to what they did with the 1M and offer a higher tuned version of the same engine in the M135i but that seems doubtful. That leaves a turbo 4 (an M version of the N20 basically) as a strong possibility. M's current strategy seems to be to save costs by no longer developing completely bespoke engines. They're latest engines are more closely based on the regular production engines. THey've done the M version of the N63 in the M5, the M3's 6 will be ased off the n55 and that leaves the N20 for the m2.

Bums me out too, but I guess you could look at it as they're returning to their roots and offering a 4 cylinder in an M car --just like the original M3 back in 87. Will help save weight too for what its worth.

base on this logic

Non-M cars

4Cyl -> 3 cyl plus hybrid
6Cyl -> 4 cyl plus Hybrid
8 Cyl -> 6 cyl plus hybrud

Mini -> 2 cyl plus Hybrid

Time to get back on my bicycle and enjoy riding.... sux big time

I think you're right, didn't think of that. Can't have the M2 and M4 both be inline six turbos.

I think it's cool, lightweight engine in the nose of the M2, could be a really great handler.

Then buy the M235i, it'll be out soon, Nov 2013 production, and will be cheaper with better gas mileage. Just google M135i vs Porsche 911 to see how good it is:

It might be the way to go. Seems strange why a company would put a smaller motor in their signature high performance car and the one below it will have a bigger motor with similar out put and plenty of scope to get more out of it.

The # of cylinders seems like a weird thing to get hung up on.

The original M3 had a 4-banger.

Yeah but the current N20 engine is a rickety/clackety angry sewing machine of an engine.

Early JB4 N20 pure stock 328 tests have the I4 turbo down to 13.0 @ 109mph 1/4 mile 0-60 in 4.6 Have to think the 2xx will be lighter than the 328.

I find that very hard to believe since there has been NO press information about it. We haven't even seen a concept car. The production docs show it starting at the end of the year 2013 -

I'd personally take an M235i over a turbo-four M2. But that's cause I don't track my cars anymore, so I'd rather take the better sound of the inline six over the better handling of the turbo four.

I just have this romantic idea that the performance boutique car should have a bigger motor than their run of the mill cars. Plus my bucket list has on it a pure m car. I'll wait until there is firm announcements from bmw until I make my next buy. I have a 4 cylinder in my x 1 and to have the same in a m car just seems strange.

Yeah, it'll be weird to go:

228i = turbo 4
335i = turbo 6
M2 = turbo 4

I hope they can use their M magic to make a turbo 4 sound good. Has anyone done this, ever? Can't remember if the Lotus Esprit sounded good.
